Appearance
The quire is a round mammal covered in extremely soft and extremely thick fur. Their coloring is primarily muted shades of white, yellow, orange, brown, and grey. Their fur sheds frequently, but is exceptionally brittle once it leaves the quire's body. They are quadrupeds, though their legs and arms are fairly short and barely visible outside of their fluffy fur. They also have short tails which end in longer fur that forms a sort of tassel off of the back of their bodies.
Behaviour
Quires are typically very docile and friendly. They love physical affection such as being petted, and will often force themselves into the way of their owners or anyone else that they encounter.
They are very territorial and tend not to leave the small areas they associate as being their homes. If forced to leave, they will become very ill and lethargic, refusing to eat and sometimes even reaching the point of death. Because of this, they do not travel well and are generally only kept by individuals who stay in one place almost exclusively.
They are generally very playful, and their cries are considered almost song-like.
Diet: Quires are naturally omnivorous, though the extensive breeding they have undergone has caused them to eat primarily dried woods and grains. Even with all of this breeding, they still love to eat small rodents.
Habitat: Originally from generally temperate wild grasslands, especially those surrounding Nymph colonies, quires have undergone generations of breeding and now thrive more easily and more commonly in urban areas.
Breeding: Quires are peculiar in that to breed, a female will lay one large egg every 6 `- 8 months. This egg is then fertilized by the male who also coats it in a protective layer of fur gathered by licking his own coat and then layering it onto the egg. One in three of these eggs does not hatch.
Special Information
- The quire's eggs are generally considered inedible due to the putrid smell and flavor caused by cracking one open, though more recent culinary changes have started to experiment with different ways of preparing them.
Strengths/Abilities:
- The most striking characteristic of the quire species is that they change size based on their mood. At a neutral mood they are generally about a foot and a half in diameter. When scared or angry they can shrink down to half of that, and when happy or excited they can expand to nearly twice their usual size.
Weaknesses:
- Due to generations of breeding, most quires are now entirely domesticated and unable to fend for themselves in the wild.
Origin: Quires were discovered several hundred years ago by Nymph communes who welcomed them as the gentle creatures they knew them to be. Soon after their docile nature was capitalized upon by poachers and well-meaning animal trainers alike.
