Spousal Relationships: Marriage by the state Racial Enemies: None Racial Weakness: Civil chaos Patron Aide: Kiril Lokinos History Only five hundred years after the first Anyelos emerged, Xanth grew bored again and created the Zanaryans, a race of humanoids with bat-like wings and stubby horns who quickly developed the power to control the elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air. A mischievous species, the Zanaryans were always at odds with their human and Anyeli neighbours but while the label of demon was not entirely earned, it did stick. To this very day, Elysians have no idea that the term 'demon' is a misnomer and the Zanaryans just got used to being called demonic. Almost to spite the general opinion about them, the Zanaryans built a glorious civilisation that spans a dimension almost as large as Earth and is split into six nations, each with its own palace and capital. Most Djan find their way to the Naharan Temple at the centre of Zanarya to train before swearing allegiance to one of the Shrine Lords. Zanaryan HierarchyZanaryans have a seemingly complex social hierarchy with three normal ranks and then several extra sets for the more powerful of the species.Djan Most Djan are fledglings who have not yet sworn allegiance to a Shrine Lord, either because they are too young or not yet strong enough. However, some Zanaryans simply refuse to become slaves and thus never rise above the rank of Djan. They may well become powerful but will never have the respect of other Zanaryans and will have little say in Zanaryan matters, nor will they ever learn the elemental powers so integral to Zanaryan society. Azat Azat are those demons who have sworn allegiance to a Shrine Lord and are training to use the elemental power granted to them. They do the bidding of the Shrine Lord, effectively becoming slaves as they grow stronger, and have an increasing influence over Zanaryan politics. The powers an Azat gains depend entirely upon the Shrine Lord they swear allegiance t, but they also develop the powers they already have as Djan such as their telepathy and the ability to glide Aryan Once an Azat has reached a certain level of experience (OOC: level 8), they stop working for their Shrine Lord and earn the full respect of their leaders. Aryan have a great deal of influence in Zanaryan matters and are entitled to challenge for the position of Nahan, leader of their own nation, and from there even Naharar, prince of their Zanaryan people. In addition to their new political freedoms and privileges, the Aryan are granted special titles that reflect their elemental path. Ifrit: The Ifrit control the element of Fire. Marid: The Marid control the element of Water. Dao: The Dao control the element of Earth. Djinn: The Djinn control the element of Air. The Zanaryan Nations
Zanarya is a dimension almost as large as Earth but is split into six nations, each one ruled by a Nahan (lord) who then answers to the Naharar (prince). While any powerful demon could become the lord of their nation, the Naharar's position is inherited by the most powerful of the prince's offspring no matter their gender, age or element. Powerplays throughout history have polluted the Naharar's lineage, however, and it is not unknown for those outside the family to usurp the throne though they are only successful if they are powerful and have enough support among both the Nahan and the Shrine Lords. Most of the Zanaryan nations are allied to a particular element except for the two nations of Ilia and Reixos which have no ties and were originally inhabited by refugees. Zanaryan politics are often overly complicated and brutal with many intrigues and plots. Even the rebel nations suffer internal battles as one element strives to dominate the rest. Only the Aryan may vote in political matters, leaving Djan and Azat without a say though Shrine Lords can be petitioned to speak on their behalf if enough of them ask it. Naharan Temple The Naharan Temple, sometimes referred to as the Zanaryan Temple, is situated at the very centre of Zanarya with borders shared with every nation making it completely neutral territory. Governed by the four Shrine Lords, it is also home to the Naharar and is protected by both Zanaryan law and the collective powers of all the Zanaryans who live there. No harm may come to anyone who enters the Temple as it is maintained as a sanctuary for all demons no matter their age, gender, element, nation or skill. Ilia Ilia didn't exist until after the Great War. A tribe of dissenters migrated to the deserts and created a small civilization where they fell into small tribes based around a single element, usually turning away anyone not affiliated with that element. There are still occasional squabbles between the tribes and bandits roam the sands with no Nahan to keep peace across the nation but for the most part each group keeps to themselves. Few Zanaryans bother entering Ilia and those who do are usually running away from something. Ilia itself is an arid desert with hot days and chilly nights. The population is very small and divided into clusters that develop around oases. Tribes tend to be nomadic and forage for food and water where they can find it. Reixos Reixos is the land of the refugees. It was formed during the Great War by those who wished to remain neutral or had to flee from their burning, flooding and crumbling homes. Most of the refugees returned to their ancestral nations after the war but a few decided to remain in the province of Reixos to mingle with demons of other elements. The most liberal part of Zanarya, Reixos is the best place for refugees and anyone who doesn't want to be tied to the political boundaries of their element. With a temperate climate and fertile lands, Reixos used to be covered by thick forests but most of the trees have been replaced by farmland and cities. Los Los is the water nation, a series of islands and archipelagos covered in swampy forests. That hasn't stopped the Zanaryans from building cities across the waterways, however, though some of these marvellous structures were destroyed during the Great War. The Los Marid are scattered throughout the swamps in stilted housing, foraging and hunting for their food. Keikis Keikis was built on highly volcanic land and has only survived due to the protection of its high-powered Ifrit. There is, in fact, an entire division of the military assigned to 'volcano watch' whose sole duty is to predict eruptions and divert lava flows from the major cities. Incredibly fertile, the lands of Keikis produce vast crops that supply a dense population accustomed to the heat and humidity. Residents are also accustomed to losing crops and homes during volcanic eruptions. Serres Zanaryans have built great cities in the valleys and on the mountain flanks of Serres, a wonderful place for Dao to get in touch with their element. The temperate climate is perfect for growing and many of the residents are farmers or the merchants who carry their goods to market in other, less temperate nations. This mountainous terrain also provides many ores for mining, also shipped to other nations and making Serres one of the richest nations in Zanarya. Paia Paia is the Djinn nation of Zanarya with small towns, villages and fortresses built into the mountainsides at high altitude where very few creatures can survive. Though there's little oxygen at these altitudes, the Djinn are comfortable here and the many fortresses provide safety and security against potential attack. Since the Great War, the Djinn have become almost paranoid about the security of their nation and homes, isolating themselves from other nations and preventing access to anyone save merchant caravans. |
