Appearance

The snowy sabre cat is a large tiger-like creature. It has thick white fur covering its body to resist the alpine climate it inhabits, with vertical black stripes running down its torso. There is a concentration of fur around the cat's skull and face, which causes the sabre to appear larger than it really is. Its eyes are feline with long, vertical pupils and irises which are usually amber, but which may be bright green by a mutation.

The cat's body is very lithe and muscled, with large, broad paws capable of walking easily across snow and up mountainsides. It has three whiskers on each side of its face, which are extremely sensitive to touch.

However, the cat's most prominent feature is its sabre teeth. The canines are elongated, so that if the cat has its mouth closed, they protrude from the upper lip for about three inches. The teeth themselves vary in size according to the genes of the cat, but range from four to six inches.

Behaviour

The snowy sabre cat is generally hostile. They usually live alone and are often nomadic. Some cats may set up a den for breeding season in the winter, but they usually travel constantly and sleep somewhere different each night.

They are territorial; while they don't have a set territory, it is seen as a threat should any living creature enter a twenty foot radius. There is competition for mates and they fight each other, regardless of gender, in duels involving a lot of clawing. The canines are usually used only in hunting and against unsuspecting Elysians?.

Snowy sabre cats will not attack foes more powerful than they are. They especially avoid groups, but will choose to pick off the weakest. Hikers should travel in numbers to discourage a sabre cat attack.

Diet: They are carnivorous; any meat will do, as long as it is fresh. They particularly enjoy the meat of fellow predators, but will settle for animals like the tiger gazelle. Snowy sabre cats have a particular distaste for the blue panther.

Habitat: They prefer an alpine climate, but the cat can inhabit many regions of the mountain. It can survive near the summit, provided it is able to climb, or may choose to make a den lower down in a cave, or it may choose mountainous forests.

Breeding: Snowy sabre cats breed in the winter season so that the young are born in the summer when prey is plentiful. The species is rare due to the loner nature of the cat, and usually the males and females are only in harmony during breeding season. Males often set up dens for the females: the more impressive and well-equipped the den, the higher the chance of reproduction. After successful breeding, the male leaves and the female nests for the next six months -- the length of the gestation period. A litter of two to three cubs is then born, and the female cares for her young for the next year. Snowy sabre cat cubs grow at an accelerated rate for the first six months of life, reaching a length of up to five feet in the first half year alone. Growing then slows for the next half of the year, and they usually grow to a length of six feet. They then leave for their seperate lives once they reach a year old.

Special Information

Strengths/Abilities:

  • The elongated canines are useful weapons.
  • The fur of the snowy sabre cat is not only admired for its aesthetics, but it has the property of hide-like armour which defends the cat from some damage.
  • The sabre cat is very sure-footed and can leap easily from heights.

Weaknesses:

  • The cats cannot withstand huge amounts of heat, and will quickly overheat and die if the environmental temperature increases by even a few degrees.
  • They have a paralysing fear of water.
  • The underbelly of sabre cats is not as thickly covered with fur and is easily pierced.

Uses:

  • Sabre cat fur can be used to make armour due to its leathery nature.
  • The cats have a saliva which can quickly seal open wounds and speed up the healing process.
  • The elongated canines are often sought as trophies by poachers and hunters.

Origin: It has been speculated that the snowy sabre cat could have been made by Xanth to resemble the sabre-toothed cats of the Cretaceous period on Earth, but it may also be a genetic relation of the blue panther.
