The unicorn's body flashed in and out of view through the patches of sun and shadow in the crisp winter air of the Fae Forest. Her hooves crunched through the snow on the frozen ground, her breathe visible in the air. Puffs of steam rose from her nostrils as she lifted her head and snorted, ears swiveling this way and that, listening for any signs of danger in the eerily quiet forest. Her brilliantly white hide rippled with the movement of her muscles underneath it as she rushed through the trees, its color helping her to blend in with the winter scene before her.

She'd gotten separated from her herd when they'd scattered as the poachers crept up on them near the stream. She and her colt had run in the opposite direction than most of their herd, but usually they were quick to double back and join them again once the danger was no longer present. This time, something had gone wrong. He'd startled as the rest of the herd broke out in loud equine screams of alarm, kicking up and galloping off on his spindly young legs into a more dense patch of the forest. Two of the poachers had rushed in between the frightened mare and her foal, and she was held back from galloping after him for a few moments while she avoided their attempts at securing her.

Luckily she'd managed to squeeze past one of them who'd stumbled during his advance towards her with a thick rope. The poachers had gotten smarter, obviously targeting the mare and the colt, or perhaps it was bad luck, but either way, she couldn't find her foal, and she was starting to panic. The mare could sense that the poachers were still tracking her. It didn't matter that much now, she was well ahead of them, what mattered most was finding her foal before they did.

She doubled back a few times in an attempt to find her colt, unable to pick up anything but a light scent of him passing this way.

She stopped her brisk canter to listen for a moment. A slight noise to her left caused her to bring her hindquarters around to the right so she could face the noise head on. It sounded like something was moving in that direction, something small and slight. She lifted her head and reared as she tried to grasp the scent of her colt from the air with an open mouth and flaring nostrils. Finally picking it up, she whinnied softly and rushed through the trees in the hopes of finding him.

She was beginning to lose hope when she jumped over a pile of snow covered rocks continued on for a few strides. She stopped and turned around in place, scanning the area for any movement. That's when she spied the him, huddled next to the pile of rocks she'd jumped over. He was shivering in a small indention in the ground. She walked over to him, nudging his neck with her muzzle, breathing in his familiar scent.

He attempted to get up, but failed, unable to put any weight on his front left leg.

She nudged him again and nickered softly, urging him to try once more to get onto his little hooves and stand.

This time he managed to stand, but only for a brief moment, toppling back onto his hind legs. He was just too cold and too weak after his escape from the poachers to get up and walk it seemed.

Anxiously, the mare looked around. Once she was convinced there were no threats in the area, she laid down next to her colt, protecting his small body with hers, in hopes of keeping him warm until he was strong enough to stand....

The mare's ears picked up noises in the distance behind her. Anxiously she ambled to onto her hooves and stood, turning in a circle towards the sound.

Her young colt still lying on the cold ground shivered as the cold his mother's body had been blocking out hit him once more. He tilted his head upwards towards his mother, little ears pricking up at the sound of her hooves on the snow.

The unicorn nudged her colt once more, willing him to stand up and fight the cold. Alone in the forest, they didn't stand much of a chance if something bigger than them came along. If the mare was by herself, she would've rejoined her herd long ago, but she wasn't. She would not leave her colt to die in the snow.

Eagerly, she watched as he struggled to get onto his feet...

Naava walked through the forest carefully and daintily. It was awkward, not having any memory. At certain times she thought something looked familiar... like maybe it was tugging out a lost memory, but when she tried to figure it out it was blank once again. It was like fighting a battle with herself to be herself, whatever that may be, and at the same time she felt like any actions she made to try to remember could cause her more pain than not remembering. Sometimes she had such an unrelenting fear... Naava wasn't sure what she wanted. To pursue a life starting here, or to try and figure out what went on before.

Sighing, Naava pulled her jacket closer as she walked along the river that wound throughout the woods. It was fairly cold here, but the presence of the water comforted Naava somehow, though she wasn't sure why. Watching the rushing liquids, Naava flowed along the land like an extension of the river itself, her long skirt concealing her feet and making it seem as if she were simply floating along. Shivering slightly at a chilling gust of wind, Naava wrapped her long coat around her body even more to keep out the wind.

Suddenly Naava heard a noise off in the distance. It was odd, she'd not heard anything but the river and her own footsteps for the mile or so that she'd walked. "Hello? Is anyone out there?" she asked the trees in her newly acquired gentleness. Not hearing a response, Naava stepped away from the river's edge. "Hello?" She called out into the woods. Then she heard it again, but this time she caught what the sound was; hoof beats. "Maybe someone's lost their horse..." Naava thought as she stepped deeper into the woods in curiosity. After all, if it was a lost horse then surely it was scared and in need of help. Perhaps Naava could be that help.

Walking along, Naava kept her eyes peeled for any contrasting shades of black or brown against the frozen greenery. It was interesting how even though she couldn't remember her life or history that she could remember simple things such has sights, sounds, tastes and words. It was as if some cruel prankster had decided to cut out anything of importance from Naava's mind and leave her injured brain to fill in the blanks. Suddenly slipping on an unseen patch of ice, Naava found herself sliding downwards a bit as she cursed herself for not paying more attention. She was paying full attention however when she hit a tree about ten to fifteen feet away from the pair of unicorns that she would have totally missed if the adult hadn't been standing up.

Freezing in her position as she just now noticed the light snow that had begun to fall, Naava watched the two animals to see what actions they would take. She might have no memory but she was not foolish enough to take any chances around wild animals, even ones as mystical as these.

The colt's legs straightened as he made it onto his little hooves for a moment, much to the mare's relief. And then he toppled back down. He was just too cold. The mare nickered and nudged him again. This place was not safe. She had to get him back to the herd before it started to snow again. She watched as the colt stretched his front legs out again and tried to gather his hind ones under him. Finally he stood, swaying this way and that, and took a step forward.

It was at that moment that the Mare's ears picked up the sound of something or someone approaching where they stood. She whirled around to face the noise, her eyes showing the edges of white, relaying her alarm at yet another intruder in the forest. Not too far away, her brain registered the shape of another human-like creature. She put her body in between her colt's and the intruder, pacing left and then right. Her eyes never left the shape of the newcomer. This one didn't smell like the others that had caused the herd to scatter, but she wasn't taking any chances.

It started to snow softly, flakes drifting down through the bare brances of the leafless trees and the green branches the evergreens dotting the forest.

Prancing forward towards the intruder a few paces, the mare reared and screamed, kicking the air before her to show just how serious she was about protecting her little one from danger.

The mare brought her front legs down and screamed, looking back at her colt. She turned around and paced towards him, urging him to run in the opposite direction from the intruder. She paced back again, looking at the intruder and snorted, her breath easily visible in the cold air. Her fear was easy for the small colt to pick up, as he too smelled the new scent of this intruder. He whinnyed at his mother, and then scrambled in the opposite direction. His legs threatened to give out a few times, but he managed to limp away to a place where he felt safe. He could still see and hear his mother, but there was a considerate amount of distance between he and the intruder.

The mare turned around again and faced the newcomer, rearing once more. Her scream echoed through the forest as the snow continued to fall gently down, not even a breeze rustling the branches of the trees. She hit the ground and charged at the intruder, rearing just before she reached it, kicking out towards the threat, and aiming to maim it...

The colt watched as his mother reared before the stranger, her hooves slicing through the air in a deadly pattern. He screamed a high pitched scream and showed the whites of his eyes in fear.

The mare heard his cry and turned towards her colt, forgetting the stranger for a second. She'd only just gotten her little one back, she was determined not to lose him again! She let out a high squeal and rushed to her colt's side, not waiting to see what the two-legged creature was doing. Two legs were no match for four legs, no matter what time of year it was in the forest.

Together, the pair of unicorns ran off in the opposite direction, the mare running only as fast as her colt could manage with his sore leg. Their bodies would soon be only specks of white in the already white, snow-filled air of the wintery scene behind them. With any luck they'd manage to join their herd by following their scent, once they caught it.

OOC: The unicorns have left the thread.

Naava watched the unicorns motionlessly as she attempted to process the situation to no avail. It was useless, she was too scared. She couldn't act, she couldn't think, the woman was even having trouble breathing right now. Looking fearfully at the large Unicorn, Naava winced and recoiled as best she could the first time the Unicorn came forward. Her heart exploded into motion as she heard hooves hit the ground with a scream and she realized she was still alive. Looking back at the animals Naava realized how far off they were from her and sighed gently. She was safe, for the moment.

The moment was fleeting however as Naava realized the Unicorn was charging again, but this time she wasn't going to stop so far away. Screaming loudly, Naava attempted to scramble to her feet on the slippery ground. "What do I do!? What do I do!?!" She shouted in her mind as her voice remained a varying shriek of horror. Still on her knees, Naava used one hand to try and push her upwards as she waved the other one in front of her, small dark shadows emanating from her palm as she moved it. "C'moon, c'mooon," she grumbled to herself as her shriel halted due to both loss of air and her throat giving out. Finally just giving up on her far too weak Shadow abilities, Naava ambled forwards along what apparently one large sheet of ice as quickly as she could.

Slumping against a tree as the Unicorn turned around, Naava breathed heavily and waited. If the Unicorn charged again, Naava needed to be able to breathe so as to make her escape as quickly as possible. Breathing loudly in great relief as the Unicorns left, Naava used the tree to pull her to her feet. It was high time to leave this forest, now all she needed was to find the river and follow it back upstream towards the portal... "I... I think it was this way..." she mumbled as she moved through the forest.
