the day has come

You'd think, that, being nine months pregnant, Suzanne would have let herself off lightly. But there was much to be done, when your husband was a business man who travelled oftenly to different places, advertising his company, working with the bosses. With a three old son, and a one year old son, and now expecting two twins, she was finding everything very difficult. But at least she was finally getting a daughter, despite the fact that she'd be going through three sons to get one. Well, it could've been only two, but her daughter had a twin. A twin brother. So all of the hardships of motherhood were being tripled. That did not mean that she would resort to favouritism, or love them on different levels. She loved her sons, Stanley and Zacharius.

They were beautiful, like they should be. Stan had her fair hair, but his father's enigmatic green eyes that sparkled with mischief, and adorable little dimples. He was shooting up, so much that she was wondering whether or not she would be able to keep track of his height. As darling as he was with her, he was often troublesome at the nursery, and it had, on more than one occasion, occured to her that he might not grow out of it unless she did something about it. But it would have to wait, sorting him out. She had two children on the way and had no intention of stressing herself.

And then there was Zach, her one year old. One year old and four months. Zach, also, had her pretty blonde hair, and her blue eyes. He looked much like his mother, as she had been told numerous times by her neighbours. He was a quiet baby who never cried unless it was necessary, and she thanked Xanth for that. Anne did not think she could handle much more in her current state.

Suzanne had been hinting to her husband that perhaps it was a good idea to raise their children in Elysia, for they might not cope well if they decided to live there. They could always decide to stay on Earth - you could always find others of your race if you knew where, and what to look for - but it was her preference that they moved to Elysia. There, they would prosper better, she thought. Hypocrite.

She had been born in a remote part of the Lake District in England, raised alongside Nature with her family, but had become a Nyad, unlike her Ayad family. She had only one other family member who had not been a Nymph of the wind, a cousin named Beatrice who had bound herself to Fire. Just like her dear Vincent.

Suzanne had met Vincent when he had been travelling, and immediately had known that he was just like her. Despite their opposite personalities, they had been inseperable. Opposites attract, Anne supposed. It was not long before she had found herself irrevocably in love with him, and a year later, they were getting married. The honeymoon in Alaska was a great success, and a memorable holiday. And here she was, at twenty-five years old, with two children and two more on the way, a husband who she was deeply in love with, and a more than comfortable life with a good income for her family. Vincent worked hard for them, he did. Maybe it was his personality that enabled him to be brilliant at what he did. It seemed that Stanley was going to be just like his father, rebellious and charismatic.

There were plenty of jobs to be done. Stan was at the pre-school for the morning, so at least she had one less thing to worry about. There was washing to be done, though. She lifted the washing basket and balanced it on her hip, already a little worn out. Bending over was hard. She didn't have the weight of one baby on her stomach, she had the weight of two. According to the doctor, however, the little girl was smaller than she should be. Great, just what she needed to reassure her.

Suzanne opened the washing machine door and tipped the clothes in, her face screwed up in concentration. The maternity clothes were not very glamorous, but they allowed her to move and shove her weight wherever she wanted to. And on top of that, she'd been having cravings for things she would never even dream of eating if she wasn't pregnant. Things like chocolate, pizza, things that were bad for her figure. The first thing she would be doing when the twins were born, which would hopefully be after Vincent got back in three days, would be skittering down to the gym to get rid of her excess body fat. Nothing like working yourself back into shape.

With the washing machine set off, Anne straightened up and waddled into the kitchen. Zach, hanging in his baby bouncer, raised his arms to her and squirmed. Obviously wanting to be out. She obliged, slipping her hands underneath his little baby arms and balancing him on her hip. He gurgled childishly and clutched his mother, giggling. Huffing slightly, Suzanne kissed his head and tickled his stomach, placing him carefully into the highchair. "Stay here while Mommy gets you some breakfast, Zachy," she cooed lovingly, her eyes full of maternal love. Anne loved her kids.

The fridge shelves were lined with bottles of milk, and the bottle heater was plugged in next to the microwave. Suzanne took out a bottle and slotted it into the bottle heater. With a few buttons pressed, hey presto, one bottle of frothy, hot, thick baby milk ready for her baby. Zach drank it happily, his little hands clutching the small bottle tightly, as if it might disappear. "Hey, slow down, honey." Anne rolled her eyes at him and turned to the sink full of small baby dishes, infant cutlery, bottles and her dinner from last night. She ran the faucet and touched the cool water that was slowly heating up, a sphere of water gathering just above the palm of her hand. Her family had disapproved of her going against their traditions, but that was how she was. And they would put up with it, like it or not. At least they could not keep picking at the subject; her current whereabouts was in America. Bangor, Maine. Beautiful, scenic little place.

Suzanne took a granola bar for her own breakfast, and glanced at the clock. Ten thirty in the morning. She'd pick Stan up at twelve, make him some lunch, give Zach another bottle, watch some daytime televison, then carry on with her chores. Zach's gurgling brought her back to reality. It took her a few moments to process that the bottle was finished. She turned off the tap and chewed the granola, putting the bar on the counter as she lifted Zach out and touched the end of his nose. "Was that good, Zachy?" Suzanne kissed him and took him into the living room, where toys were scattered everywhere, and the TV was turned on. She'd planned the decor out well, making the room airy and bright. Zach was placed into his playpen, where he could safely play with his toys or go to sleep if he wanted. Toy trains, cars and building blocks all dominated one area of the pen. In another, there was a fleecy blue blanket. Hopefully Zach would not cry to be out.

Half an hour later, the washing up was done and the kitchen surfaces had been wiped down, the highchair disinfected. Zach was asleep in the playpen, his thumb in his mouth, his beautiful face serene and so infantile. Suzanne wrapped him in the blanket and lifted him out carefully, so as not to disturb him. Sharp stabbing pains invaded her stomach. She winced and sat down on the sofa for a moment, her eyes shut, Zach sound asleep on her chest, which was heaving. One of the twins must be sitting on a nerve, she thought as the pain subsided. That's when the dam collapsed. Suzanne groaned as she watched her maternity trousers become wet, and reached for the phone, her breathing laboured. Anne stabbed in 911 and exhaled exasperatedly, panic filling her. Vincent wasn't home yet, and she was about to give birth to two twins. Oh great. They couldn't have held on for a bit longer? Outside, the sun was shining. Summer babies.

"Hello, operator? Could you please send an ambulance to..."

getting home

"We’re sorry, Mr Casius, but your business idea would not incorporate well with our company. As good as it is, and despite the fact that you presented it to us with the manner of a true businessman, we’re going to have to reject it. The company cannot afford to give charity at the moment, but there are many businesses who can. Again, we are sorry."

Some heads were going to be set on fire, that was for sure. Before the man had spoken, Vincent’s expression had been enthusiastic, and his words had came out passionately, trying to sell his idea to them. He already had some athletes to advertise it - a baseball team that was nearly local to him - and a trademark logo, but these big-time jackasses were rejecting it. Now that, that was enough for him to know that all they cared about was money-making, as did the rest of their competitors. If they could only see that, because of the world’s current state of affairs, his latest brain wave could bring home the bacon and help to make the world a better place. If only they could see the sense behind his idea, that they could kill two birds with one stone and everyone was happy.

Vincent gritted his teeth, and composed himself. He smiled, his beautiful face lighting up with his charming business man smile. The one he used when he was selling his products to the people of America. Now all he had to do was find his words, his acceptance, his gratitude for being allowed to show his presentation. But no. He was a Nereid for a reason. Inhaling slowly, exaggerating his breathing pattern, Vincent calmed himself. The members of the board were looking at him intently, awaiting his answer. He touched the back of his neck and a cold sweat clung to his skin.

"Thankyou for your time, Mr Davis. I hope you have enjoyed my presentation, and maybe I can work alongside Parker Industries some time in the future." Vincent was now impatient to be out, and he gathered the diagrams, logo and photos of the baseball team who would promote the Charity Heart Foundation back into his folder. Bidding the board farewell, he briskly left the board room. He could hear their muttering before he had even passed the doorframe, and he was irritated by it. Some people just could not use their brains to realise what potential something could have.

Vincent pressed the button for the elevator repeatedly, and sighed, touching the dark hair that, hopefully, the twins would inherit. They were due anytime soon, he supposed, and the sooner he could reach Suzanne, the better. He missed her so much. He missed the golden locks of her hair, her sparkling blue eyes that made his soul melt, the simple looks that could bring a man to his knees. He longed for her, she was the very purpose of his being - other than his kids. Two sons, and another son and a daughter - just what Anne wanted - who would be born soon. Two more days, and he would be home. Home to his wife and children. If Suzanne didn't give birth until he got home, then he was certainly in luck.

The elevator came, fanfaring its arrival with a small ding as the doors opened. He edged in, and pressed the button for the ground floor. The only other person in with him was a woman, a pretty woman who kept glancing his way, her mouth curved upward into a flirting smile. Vincent paid her no heed. He had eyes for one woman, and one woman alone, the beautiul Nymph he had married after meeting her in England. Such perfection, was her character and her face. Everything about her was perfect, in his eyes. She was a goddess, too good for him.

His elevator-sharing companion seemed dissatisfied as she left for the fourth floor. Vincent sighed. He hated being eyed up and down by anyone who was not his Suzanne. It made him feel like a lab rat, or a zoo animal. Maybe that was a big downside to being a Nymph. He loved being what he was, and it felt like, being a Nereid, he could cope better with an urban environment than others. None the less, it made an impact. He felt weary at the moment, and hoped he didn't look haggard. The elevator doors opened once more, revealing the sparkling reception, with its shiny white tile flooing, and its desks of receptionists busy on the phone. Vincent stepped out into the bustling reception, his black work shoes squeaking on the shiny surfaces. He exhaled and stopped before the revolving doors to position his tie correctly, and make sure he looked okay.

Yep. Definitely needed to find a volcano or a desert on the way home, be among his element. Suzanne would have a fit if she knew that he was neglecting himself to make money for his wife and children. She would see to it that he was keeping his health in tip-top condition. She was the perfect wife in many ways, especially like that. She'd always be looking after you, making sure you had enough to eat. Making sure you were eating the right foods and making sure your health was perfect.

Vincent stepped out into New York and ran a hand through his dark hair, his folder clutched tightly in one hand. The time was late morning and he had not had anything to eat since the bowl of soup last night in the restaurant. Gourmet food certainly came in stingy portions, he had noted. Whistling for a taxi, Vincent flung open the cab door that stopped for him and hopped in. "The Ritz," he told the driver. Oh, he loved his company when it came to picking hotels for him. The driver nodded, and soon they were speeding through the roads of New York, Vincent in the back, staring at his hands.

When he stepped out of the cab, after forking over $5, the familiar vibration of his cell phone in his back pocket jolted him out of his daydream. He answered it with a, "Hello?" and blinked, his already pale skin turning even more so. "I'm in New York. Yes. No. Okay. I can make it there by nightfall at the latest. Thankyou. Take good care of her. Bye." Vincent sighed as he sprinted into the grand lobby of The Ritz. Couldn't the twins have held on a little longer?

a letter for venus anarachi

My silly child Venus,
If this letter reaches you, I would have you immediately gild it with gold and consider it your lifeline. You foolish, foolish girl! Your father and I are worried out of our minds, and all you care about is that worthless little good for nothing you ran off with. Why not the suitor we picked for you? Was he not good enough? He clearly has a better reputation and is more rich than the undeniably errant idiot that you eloped off with and got engaged to. Nothing good will come of this, Venus Anarachi. Mark my words. It's those soppy romances, isn't it? The ones you bought on Earth? Xanth save us all. You are a disgrace! Pride and Pretentious, or whatever it's called, is not going to bring you any further to a good future. Secure your life of luxury! Come home, Venus. Back to Nirim. Your father and I are so distressed. Or at least, I am. Your father is infuriated, and he reminds me everyday of the unacceptable disgust that he is currently harboring for you. Please, Venus. It's for the good of all of us, you must understand that. I shall calm down and finish this letter later.

Venus, get yourself back here. You need to be taught a lesson, girl, you irresponsible excuse for a Dragon. Get back here and I promise I won't have to send your brother after you. Don't you think for one moment that Xanth will be protecting you, you little chit.

Oh, dear. I do wish your father would stop writing on my letters to you. Don't feel threatened by him, honey, he's just anxious and upset. He has such a way with words, don't you think? He's a typical Rutilus, you can tell. Oh, but I will give you this message from him. He is utterly disappointed in you for choosing the namby-pamby nonsensical way of the Gold dragon. He wishes you had done what he wanted and chosen to be a Viridis. You could have been a great doctor, he says. You would have made a reputation for yourself and made lots of money and been happy with a wealthy husband. Venus, Venus, Venus. Do come home.

I promise that your father won't give you that much trouble. Just break off the engagement with this man, and come home to us. He's a good for nothing Peteulanus! Where will you both be, a telepath and an empath? You will not be able to have a decent career in your sept, that much is for sure. Have nothing more to do with this man. Come home, please. Danurai is no place for a twenty year old girl with no experience in the world. Nirim is where you belong.
Love,
Your Caring Mother

a letter for ophelia anarachi

My concerned mother Ophelia,
You need not worry. I am in safe hands, yet you and father find my choice of man strangely inappropriate. My father is not part of my life anymore, and if he cannot put up with my choice to become an Aurumus, then I do not have a father. Mama, was it not you, the ruthless, fierce young Ophelia Havana, that fell in love with a handsome young man, Leonidas Anarachi? You ran off with him, so do not tell me what is right and wrong. You are being hypocritical, my dear mama. As much as I love you, you have to respect my decision. It is made.

As for those 'soppy novels' they simply influenced me and melted my heart. I enjoy them mama, the romance, the passion. And that 'worthless good for nothing' has a name. Timothy and I are very happy together. He is a good Petuelanus, despite the fact of your fierce dislike for him. I am helping him cope with the headaches, so why can you and Father not see that my happiness lies with him?

Don't even dare to send my brother after me. He'd cheerfully lop Timothy's head off with an axe, and you would let him. Mama, that is cruel. Let me be happy. Don't lecture me! I am not coming back to Nirim. Nirim is not my home anymore, and father is so... insolent. I would never come back unless you accepted Timothy, and the septs we belong to! I did not become a Viridis, get over it, mama. I am proud to be an Aurumus, and Timothy is a proud Peteulanus. I am not your little girl anymore.
Yours Lovingly,
Venus

a letter for athena ostaire

My supportive mama Athena,
I am sorry that I left on such short notice. I am trying to win Venus from her family. They do not want us to be together, I am told by my darling fiancé, and I can see it. It is stark, blatant. Cruelly trying to plunge a dagger into my back, and without you, I am nearly lost. My headaches are easing off, Venus is helping me. Buying me aspirin daily, massaging my head when I need it. Do you know, she has chosen the same sept as you are from, mama? She is now an Aurumus. She tells me what she can feel, around here, she says it pours and rolls off of them. She is inexperienced, but learning. And I tell her the thoughts that go with each emotion. We are growing up.

They mocked me, mama. Turned me away from their family. Alienated both I and Venus, and now they are grovelling for her return. She will not hear it, though, and constantly is brought to tears by her vicious father or reprimanding mother. But if it is within my power, I ask you not to march over there and give them a piece of your mind. It will sink us into deeper trouble, and I do not want to pressure Venus anymore. I have made her a disgrace to her family, so it is the least I can do.

Her family liked me well enough until they realised my feelings. They thought me a friend, and from then on, it was cautious treading. The Anarachi family are rich and family, and when Venus revealed her love for me, they abandoned her. Cast her off, like a pariah. So it is now my undwindling love that keeps us well. I have a job as a historian, she as a dancer. Do not worry about us, mother. We are young.
Love,
Timothy

P.S. young hearts run free.
