Elysian Fields: Them Big Pointy Things - Elysian Fields

Earth

Quote

Many Elysians have never been to Earth since by nature they're in danger the very second they step through the portal, but Earth is eclectic and open-minded enough now that Elysians can wander at will (especially around Halloween) as long as they are extremely careful to hide their nonhuman traits.

However, many Elysians would rather avoid Earth, having nothing but bad history with their ancestral homeland, and Elysians and Terrans alike have been known to go "missing" or be otherwise punished when caught up in the Old Society's continued efforts to keep nonhumans secret and safe.

Nor does Xanth take kindly to those who expose her children.

They were big.

That was a weak word. The word 'big' fell so short of accurately describing these things that it was practically a lie. These were the kind of things that made 'big' things go running home to their mothers, giving them severe inferiority complexes and an urge to start therapy. These were giants in comparison to giant things. A more appropriate word might have been...Titanious. That was a good one.

Reese was of course looking at the pyramids. Not those little imposter mounds of brick in Spain and Peru, but the proper, pointy ones in Giza, Egypt.

It was a bit of a classic tourist action turning up here, he knew. With a country with such a truly rich history and culture, it was a shame all people seemed to care about was some large heaps of rock. Not that they weren't, of course, brilliant, amazing structures and a true testament the fact that humans aren't totally stupid. But either way, when you took away all the majesty, grandeur and impressiveness, they were still just rocks.

He'd put off coming here till the end of the day. Earlier, making rather awkward use of portals, he'd visited some of the other landmarks of the Ancient Egyptians, Abu Simbel and Kadesh, for example. To be honest, he'd thought it all rather boring. He did admire Ancient Egypt, but visiting the site where something or other happened wasn't really all that amazing. He was trying hard to be a tourist, but he wasn't quite getting the appeal. Yes, these things happened, and yes, they were remarkable, but you're not going to make them any more interesting just because you're standing in the same general area.

He'd been brought up a human, and the chances were he had a lot of human blood, but he never felt like one. It seemed to him as if humans were a completely different species with all these odd rituals and beliefs that made no sense. Not religions, because they did make some sense, in an odd way. But things like money. A lot of people thought money was good, that was obviously silly. But a lot of people thought money was evil too, Reese found that just as odd. Money was little bits of metal and fabric, that's all it was. What was the point of assigning it a moral status? People were weird.

So, as he sat on a bench at the base of the biggest one, he wondered what he was supposed to be thinking. Other people would probably be admiring the complex architecture of the ancient people. He'd done that for around ten seconds. But he was a tourist and felt more was expected of him than this. He spotted a few people "Ooohing" and "Ahhing" so he decided to try that, but he couldn't manage to derive any enjoyment from it. He'd never been able to grasp these human concepts. He was still very childish in a way; he was extremely logical and seemed totally immune to social norms. He couldn't make sense of so many human rituals. In fact, that was another thing. He'd called other people 'humans' long before he'd been aware of any other specials. For all intents and purposes, he was a human and had always been one. But he didn't feel like one. It wasn't as if he felt like a nymph either. He felt like he was him, and everyone else just buzzed around him in strange ways. On good days it filled him with mild amusement seeing other people behave in such odd ways. On bad days his own cynicism at the pointlessness of the world could throw him into deep depression. It was a bit of chance, really.

For now, he pulled his knees up and wondered what to do.

It was with great delight when Isabel found out that she could travel to different parts of the Earth via portals. She had always wanted to travel but even if her family had the means and the money, she was to shy and scared to ask her parents about it.

Egypt and the pyramids in Giza was the first place she thought of. It was one of the countries she love reading about. It history, culture, and myths. She always looked forward to watching those archaeological documentaries on Egyptian kings and mummies on Discovery Channel and National Geographic back in England.

As she stepped out of the portal, she couldn't contain her excitement. Her spirits fell a tad when she thought about her family and having a vacation such as this.

As she neared the the tallest pyramid, the Pyramid of Khufu if she remembered right, she couldn't help but feel at awe. This is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world after all. It was magnificent. Blocking out her surroundings and ignoring the tourists bimbling about, Isabel just stood there and stared at the pyramid for a while.

Noticing a bench with a single occupant, Isabel thought to sit a while and rest her feet. She sat at the other end of the bench and glanced at the other occupant surreptitiously. "Oh, how pretty." Pretty? Did she just say pretty? She's sitting next to a he - a guy, right? You can't call guys pretty, right? Isabel chanced another look at the guy then blushed. What the bloody hell was she doing checking out guys. She was here to see the pyramids. The pyramids! Isabel felt her cheeks grow hotter and started looking around for other benches she could rest her feet.

Reese was sitting sideways, so he had been facing the girl already as she approached. This made it very difficult to tell if the reason his eyes followed her was anything other than mild acknowledgement of the fact she was sitting on the same bit of wood. He noticed she seemed to be blushing, it stood out on her pale skin, but that could be because of the heat. The sun was beginning to set, giving everything a violent magenta tint, but it was still exceptionally warm.

But then again it might not have been.

He tilted his head and watched her with amusement. She seemed all right. A little shy, but that was smart. Most the Egyptians he'd met had seemed cheerful enough chaps, but openly broadcasting, "Hey, I've got the money to holiday here, but I don't know how to say, 'After him!' in the local language," wasn't generally a smart move.

He wondered if she was holidaying here, or just 'visiting' like him. Lately, he'd found himself looking at everyone and wondering if they knew. He wondered if, when he was younger, someone had looked at him and wondered if he knew. He'd often wondered if Elysians had walked past him in the street everyday and known what he was when even he himself hadn't known. Was it obvious? Even now, were there other nymphs walking past him and counting him as 'one of theirs' as if there was any real difference between him and the other humans? The thought disgusted him.

She did look a bit like a vampire, really. It was so frustrating. Not knowing. You couldn't exactly ask a woman something like that. Not if you liked the current arrangement of your facial features, anyway. It was their fault, far too sensitive. It wasn't as if the fact you doubted their species was intended as an insult or something...OK, they might have a point.

She seemed a bit nervous, looking around. It looked as if she was about to leave. Finding she was the most interesting thing that had happened since he got here, he decided to take the opportunity for conversation while it lasted. "You all right?" He grinned at her. "I'm Reese," he said, then considered the situation for a second, "I'm dead shy," he added, humour in his eyes.

Isabel turned her head so fast it was surprising she didn't get whiplash. She thought her face couldn't get anymore hotter but judging from the heat on her face it just did. Did he notice her looking? She looked at the guy warily, trying to determine if he noticed her sneaking a peek at him or not. He seemed nice enough and sincere although maybe a bit mischievous going by the introduction he's made.

Meeting new people wasn't one of her key points. With her awkward shyness and unsociable attitude, people tend to stay away from her. Her brother was always the life of the party not to mention her mother's constant warning to her as a child always kept repeating itself in her mind whenever she gets into such situations; like now for instance.

"Remember, don't talk to strangers, love."

It was beginning to get annoying and irritating. Deciding to try and change her ways, Isabel ignored the warning in her head and smiled awkwardly at the guy beside her.

"Uh... hi. I'm Isabel or Isa for short, whichever you prefer."

She sat sideways facing the guy properly and offered her hand in greeting while placing the other on her lap. Her smile widened a tad though with still a hint of a blush on her cheeks. With a twinkle in her eye, Isabel couldn't help saying what was on her mind.

"I can very well see that you are exceedingly shy. Do you do this often?"

((Sorry, code ain't working at the momennttt D:))

Reese grinned as the girl whipped her head around. Maybe it hadn't been the heat after all. "Reese."

Reese pondered. Did he do this often? It wasn't something he'd thought of before. He just acted however he felt at the time. He'd never really applied tags like "outgoing" or "shy" to himself, contrary to the evidence a few seconds earlier. "And that really depends heavily on what you mean by 'this,'" he smiled wickedly "If you mean sit on benches all day long and try and lure unsuspecting girls into my web of terror, then yes," He laughed evilly.

Glad of his unusual good mood, he gazed up at the pyramid. It was big, that might have already been mentioned. "But I'll give up my horrible life of crime just to look at that..."" The deep pink tint of the setting sun on the mound of brick created such a dramatic image it really was hard believing it was a real thing, not the painting of a deeply inspired artist who was perhaps fond of some questionable substances at the time.

He made a mental note to remember this. He was always open to inspiration for new songs and art. The Girl By Magenta Rock, that was a good name. Laughing softly, and grinning to himself at the thought, he looked back, "You into Ancient Egypt?"

Isabel couldn't help but laugh at his response. There's something about a person with a good sense of humor that gets to her. With laughing eyes she looked toward the great pyramid as well - with the setting sun behind it casting ample shadow on where she sat. It was definitely a thing to behold she mentally agreed.

"Yes, very much.", she replied pleased that she had made a new friend. "I find their culture and myths fascinating. Their history too is very interesting and even with all the archeological evidences there's still a bit of mystery to it; and I do so love a good mystery. Don't you think so?"

She looked at him speculatively wondering about his purpose here but thought it too rude to ask. He doesn't look like any ordinary tourist and he is definitely not local. Plus, there's something a bit different about him - like something otherworldly.

"Are you into ancient Egypt as well?", she asked instead.
