The Quadrangle

Quote

The quadrangle is a pretty little square in New Alexandria. Overhung by chiolen trees at each corner, Xanth's Statue sits at the centre of a clean-cut grass quadrangle.

Lani lightly walked into the quadrangle, lights shining off stones and things that made you wonder all seemed to start and end here. This was the center of something, she just didnt know what. Unconsiously she shivered and ran a hand across her neck, as though it could go through her to her back where there lay scar upon scar. It wasnt that she was a bad shifter, she just didnt know what she was doing. Luckily she'd managed to find a tattoo design that covered it up but the reminder was still there.

She'd heard stories about things that had happened in this very quadrangle. People striking it rich, getting struck down, and she wondered if the rumors about an arsonist trying to burn the place down was true. She shivered again. She wouldnt get paid a million xanthos to do something so stupid and disrespectful. A sudden gust of wind blew through the statues and she approached the area she'd been blocked off from until she was old enough. It was kind of exciting, she'd been waiting for so long to be able to show her godess that she appreciated all that she did.

She sat down on the steps in front of one of the offering dishes, covered in so many jewels and bit her lip. Her offering was nothing compared to these treasures, but she hoped she would like it all the same. Crossing her legs, she removed a chain from around her neck. It was a rosary, only insted of a cross that the humans used, it was a small figure of a woman in loose clothes, her purple hair flowing, arms reached towards the outside reaches of the universe. She gently set it on the bowl, feeling as though she'd left a securit blanket, but knowing it was in safe hands.

"Xanth, I want to thank you. You gave me something to believe in. And believe me, when your in a healers room, with your back torn up from a shifting accident, while your lying there, screaming from the pain and fear inside but not able to scream externally, its difficult to find hope. I passed out but when I woke up the rosary was arround my neck. I dont know if a healer left it or my father or you, but it reminded me that someones out there watching me. " She spoke this in Russin, head bowed, then laughed a little. "Forgive me for my ramblings, it tends to happen more often then I'd like."

The gust of wind that first hit the statue made no difference to the gleaming purple marble. As the girl began to speak, her delicate offering a beacon that reinforced her words of thanks, Xanth's interest was piqued. She would never consciously consider herself to be vain; in fact, for all the effort she made on behalf of Elysia and her sister realms, she could only think she deserved many more thanks than she received, and she considered herself modest and humble in the way she did not demand such the way her father, or even the drunkard Dananka, would.

In truth, however, she would concede to a certain amount of vanity if pressed, and the variety of idols created in her image over the millennia had always impressed her - not merely for the fact that they were made in her image, but from a purely artistic perspective as well. But, while she could, and often did, dismiss her vanities and ignore such offerings, she was in a particularly susceptible mood today, although she did suspect there was more to this visit than met the eye as those who usually paid homage in order to thank her did so quickly and left just as speedily.

Another gust of wind curled through the quadrangle, rustling through the trees where spring blossoms were budding, and ruffling through the statue's hair which, while the rest of the statue remained marble, was slowly gaining the appearance of real, albeit still purple, hair.

"Forgive me for my ramblings, it tends to happen more often then I'd like."

The statue's lips, now warm lavendar flesh, moved as Xanth translated her words into Russian and projected them into the girl's mind. "Indeed." The statue's clothes were now also beginning to loosen, ruffling slightly like fabric in a breeze, and the statue's head tilted so the eyes - glowing darkly - could fix on the Therian.

Lani mostly had come to the statue to think. The rumors that mentioned the godess actually showing up where just that, rumors, so she didnt expect much, but being in the Quadrangle gave her a peace of mind. Someone had obviously been working hard to keep the place shining, but for all she knew it was Xanth, protecting it somehow. The statue in the square really was exquisite, and she studied it for a moment, wondering who saw Xanth long enough to make a replica of her in such a beautiful way. They must have studied for long hours after schooling, perhaps on a father or mothers knee? To learn how to create that presise feminine but powerful figure that was on the statue.

There was something about the way the stone hair seemed to flow in the wind, and that twinkle in its eye....in a moment, this was proven not to be superior craftsmanship, but the godess herself. Her eyes widened in suprise at the Russian in her mind, and she smiled, realizing that talking outwardly wasnt nessicary. In her mind this time, she spoke. "I speak English fluently as well, choose whichever you prefer.....I'm not quite sure what to call you...Xanth or Godess...." She then realized she'd been disrespectful and took a deeep kneeling bow to the godess before standing up. "I've had far more difficultly controling my shifting, and Papa is too busy with my siblings (they're a handful) to help. Do you have anyone you would recommend?"" She was hoping for a name, but if the Godess vanished, deciding the request unnessecary, she wouldnt mind, the Godess had better things to do than give advice to a shifter who couldnt even control her abilitys.

"You grant permission, do you?" Xanth murmured aloud and telepathically, the statue's eyebrows arching haughtily. The head turned, purple eyes flashing with interest. "Do not be lazy, child; I enjoy hearing the voices of my people." This was true enough: She heard their thoughts in her mind all the time and had to forcibly shut them out, so it was always nice to hear their voices instead. Sound was much more grounded and real, helping to focus her attention on the subject at hand.

She ignored the rhetoric about her name, as that was not something she could - or rather, would - dictate. While obviously she preferred not to be called anything other than Xanth, there were naming conventions that each race - each culture, each religion, each society - must follow and she would accept what conclusion an individual reached. Even if it was an insult, though she naturally would not tolerate such.

The girl's effort to show respect was so quick, Xanth could not help but be amused, and the statue's lips twitched in a smile that formed fully as the Therian continued. She must be one of the few people who could actually speak - successfully - in brackets, an impressive feat to say the least.

Still, the question was not one Xanth should be summoned for. She had encouraged internal governments and infrastructure designed to make sure youngsters like this one were not left to their own devices and she would not interfere with that when it was unnecessary. "I suggest, child, that you pay a visit to the Rowan Caverns; you will find what you need there."

Lani blushed. She hadnt meant it that way, but it sounded like it. Imagine, Xanth needing permission from a almost powerless elysian like her! No, no, no, she had most definatly NOT meant to make it seem like she needed permission. Then, feeling like a child recieving a scolding, she blushed a little and said (still in russian) "My apologys Xanth. I didnt know if you where perhaps more fluent in one language." Silly of her to think of the godess as having flaws (for she truely beleived that Xanth had none.)

"I suggest, child, that you pay a visit to the Rowan Caverns; you will find what you need there." Xanth said and Lani stood there for a moment. Of course. That was the obvious thing to do. She'd practicly been raised in the Rowan Caverns, but had not even thought of them when trying to find a shifting teacher. Feeling silly and embarrased slightly, she gave Xanth a bow of her head, not knowing if it was appropriate to bow twice.

Normally she was blunt and held her ground with anyone, but there where always exceptions, Xanth definatly being one of them. She knew when to respect her elders. "Thank you for advice Xanth, the option hadn't even occured to me."

The statue's lips twitched again but this time, the promised smile did not appear even though Xanth was amused by the girl's reaction. At Lani's apology, the statue waved a hand dismissively, and purple sparks wafted down from the marble fingertips, floating on the air and across the grass like lazy fireflies.

A peal of laughter chased across the square as Xanth read the girl's thoughts. She was far from flawless and she had made enough mistakes to warrant the doubts and questions some of the older - and even younger - Elysians had. The absolute trust in others quite literally frightened her sometimes; too often she worried over what might happen should the people stop questioning her. She would have only her own conscience and self-doubt to keep her from becoming a tyrant and she feared that would not be enough.

The statue's lips twitched yet again as Xanth murmured, without bothering to translate this time, "Indeed". Taking pity on the girl, she added, "What we seek is often right under our very nose". It was easy to overlook the obvious and the simple in favour of the hidden or complexity. "Good luck on your quest." Xanth did not imagine the girl would need luck, but a person could rarely have too much of it.

As the statue returned to its original pose, the sparks faded from view and the marble quickly re-solidified, leaving a faint smile on the purple lips and a mischievous twinkle in the purple eyes.
