It was too late—Elias had been caught! Two Therians and a ‘Varian had tracked him down to his secret basket hideout, and were currently trying to knock him over. Elias couldn’t be defeated, for he’d come too far, and fought too hard, and this wallet was his!

Despite the complete lack of an answer within the basket, Elias coiled his legs and carefully placed his hands on the basket’s top. If a wooden beam wasn’t waiting for him in his immediate vicinity, then Elias was about to have an extremely difficult time keeping his prize.

As Elias sprung out of the basket, and peered down at his pursuers, a smirk twisted its way across his face. Not to say that Elias knew that there was an escape route coming straight to him, but rather, the idea that he couldn’t possibly be caught needed to be made clear. However, there were no rafters for Elias to grab onto, and so he ended up landing on the basket.

Elias tightened his legs, making sure that he’d land on the basket as if it was actually strong enough to support his weight. For the few moments that it shakily stayed up, Elias folded his arms and aimed his victorious smirk down at his helpless victims.

“You’ve wasted your time! I’ll escape, as I always have! None of you can—ho-o-ohoho!”

Just as Elias was prepared to deliver the punch-line, his basket-podium fell over beneath him, forcing him to choose a direction.

Right!

Elias dove with all his might, trying his best to grab onto the upper support of the nearest stall. He may have ended up kicking all of the shop keeper’s wares off of the counter, and Elias may have barely moved five feet with this little maneuver, but a new plan formed in the horned thief’s mind. On this day, Elias would leap from one stall to another, assuming that nobody was fast enough to catch up or even cut him off.

Kiel's expression brightened considerably at the sight of the two puppies, and he sat up straight. The wave of depression melted almost physically, leaving him with a massive grin on his face as he leaned forward again to pet the closest of the two. “I know you! Like, you sniffed me out. Good doggies! That's totally awesome. But also kind of creepy.” He didn't get chance to dwell on the creep factor, though, as the puppies almost immediately set on the basket he was sitting on.

Leaping to his feet as the two butted determinedly against the basket, Kiel frowned in utter bewilderment for a moment. His brain was just catching up when the basket exploded to reveal the thief who'd taken his wallet!

Kiel ducked instinctively, gaping up at the demon as he crowed his triumph. “Nuh uh! That's my wallet!” On the emphasised "my", he leaped forward with no thought to the consequences, both arms outstretched to grab around the Zanaryan's waist so their momentum would carry them over the baskets to land on the merchandise. “Give it back, give it back!”

Somehow, Elias had been caught, a bewildering event that set his entire view of reality on its ear. To think that such a foolish ‘Varian could end his spree, and yet, Elias wasn’t ready to simply give up!

Every single prison cell had a weak point, and so did the fumbling fool that had taken Elias to the ground. Thinking with dishonor and cheap tactics, Elias tightened his right leg and swung it straight into the ‘Varian’s precious junction.

“Release your grip, or so help me, I’ll see to it that you become a eunuch!”

As Elias spoke, however, he kicked the spot once more for emphasis. If nothing else, the pain would ward off the vagrant, and Elias would be able to move on with his escape. Even if the wallet didn’t have a great deal of value itself, Elias felt a certain visceral pleasure in escaping after being caught.

Then again, considering that two conniving Therians were also nearby, Elias felt that his chances of escaping scot-free were slim. Dogs had a good sense of smell, and it was rare for a canine Therian to ever relinquish its prey.

Musing shortly, Elias decided that he’d never killed a dog before, but if it came down it that he had the heart to put down a mangy mutt if necessary. That, and the fact that they were in fact shape-shifters, and not true dogs. Did that mean that Elias would kill every one of his pursuers just for a wallet? Not likely, but it was nice for the demonic thief to know that he was capable of such an act.

Kiel had only ever been kicked there once before, when he was, like, much younger and trying to model himself after Tad without much success. He'd watched Tad with the girls on their trips to town and, like, envied his brother's natural suaveness. On their next trip, he'd approached one of the girls he'd been crushing on and, like, totally messed up.

He'd never tried emulating Tad ever again, for sers. The physical pain had been made all the worse for the fact that his entire family had been witness and, like, never let him live it down.

But, like, he'd either forgotten just how devastating the pain had been back then, or Emily had gone much easier on him than he'd thought, because, like, “Ho-lee Xanth!”

Wallet forgotten, Kiel's hands dropped in a belated effort to protect himself. Too late, he could only moan and roll to the side, curling up into a foetal position. All manner of bad words boiled through his mind as he rocked himself instinctively, but the only thing coming out of his mouth was a garbled groan.

Lani watched in part amusement, part horror, as Smelly Man kicked Bubbles where the sun dont shine. Although she wasnt a man, she winced in symphathy for him and her tail instinctivly went between her legs, although there was nothing to protect. Running up to him, she licked his hand once, before deciding to run after Smelly Man. Bubble's had gone through enough; and she was going to get him his wallet back.

Whirling around, she bared her teeth at the man, anger flowing through her. She made part of her mouth foam (the person part of her deciding to freak out the guy) and growled, before chasing after him. Her intent was to either run into his legs, or bite his ankles, just to get him down. If she could, she had no doubts that she could keep him pinned.

Most likely by almost biting his throat, and staying ontop of him until Bubbles could intervene. This was of course the plan, and she tried her hardest to make it work.

An escape!

The ‘Varian had rolled over, clutching the damaged area that Elias had so cleverly struck. All that remained was a pair of ornery Therians, and their small stature had no bearing on their noble intentions: Elias would be chased, and his powerful scent would only lead them after him. It was time for the prize to be given up, but not before a few key elements were removed.

The horned thief sprung onto his feet, stared the Therians down, and immediately grabbed the nearest bag of spices; it was filled with pepper. If the Therians were equipped with powerful noses, then they’d soon enjoy a snout-full of grounded Elysian pepper! Elias tossed the bag with high hopes, turned-tail, and ran into the nearest alleyway.

“Not today, nor tomorrow! Behold your weakness, your incompetence—I cannot be caught!”

There wasn’t any room for scaling buildings, or fleet-of-foot—Elias had become too desperate to that. As if placed there by magic, Elias spotted a large garbage container, filled to the brim with smelly garbage. No Therian would distinguish the thief’s brimstone musk from the contents of Elysia’s wastes, or so the thief assumed, and thusly did he dive into the container.

Within, Elias gave himself a few moments before finding the hard-found wallet. Nothing in it aside from the xanthos caught the thief’s fancy, and so he’d remove the currency and toss the wallet up and away.

The fate of the pursuers was no longer his business, for Elias would remain in the container for as long as it took. Spending all of the stolen cash at once was ill-advised today, for such a brilliant escape had to be followed by the gradual savoring of one’s bounty.

Kiel was wishing he was dead. Like, anything had to be better than the pain radiating through his gut, and he was telling the world as much in a continuous string of moans, groans and incomprehensible mutters.

His eyes squeezed shut as he rolled and writhed on top of the basket that had been, like, crushed beneath his and the demon's weight, he had no idea what was happening. He was, like, only vaguely aware of a wet swipe against his hand. He even thought he heard, after a bit of a commotion, the demon's taunting voice, but, like, owwwwwww.

He wasn't about to let this guy, like, get away with kicking him, though. His brothers would never let him hear the end of it if they, like, found out he'd been decked by a single kick! He was a - owww - Taskel and he was going to - owwww-owowow - join the Reds. There was no room for - oh, Xanth - quitting!

Whimpering, he opened his eyes and struggled over onto his front with the intention of getting up onto his knees, and, like, from there onto his feet. He only made it as far as turning over, his hat toppling off his head to let his hair flop into his eyes. “Owwwwwwwwwwwww.”
