The Quadrangle

Quote

The quadrangle is a pretty little square in New Alexandria. Overhung by chiolen trees at each corner, Xanth's Statue sits at the centre of a clean-cut grass quadrangle.

Kiel didn't think he'd ever walked so fast. He was like greased lightning, ducking and dodging from Piper's Boutique all the way to the quadrangle. He was out of breath when he got there but it was worth it to, like, minimise the number of people who'd see him with a girly bear in his arms.

He was hurrying for more than that, though. Like, he didn't have much time to get this done and he didn't want to have to text his sister to let her know he'd failed. Tribute was a big thing for the Taskels and Chlo would, like, tell everyone and they'd hound him until his dying day just for missing a year. One lousy year.

But, like, he wanted to do this for himself anyway. He'd been raised to believe completely in Xanth and to be thankful for what she'd given them. His grandpa always talked about his own father being alive during the exodus from Earth so it was a big thing during Kiel's childhood. No way he was missing it, even if he had to, like, run all the way across the worl-

No, okay, he'd miss it then. He hated running.

“So, like, thanks,” he told the statue breathlessly. He'd tried to cut corners by leaping over a bench, but almost took his legs off in the effort, and now he was bent, his hands resting on his knees as he sucked air into his lungs, the teddy bear resting half in and half out of the offering dish where he'd dropped it. “Gimme... a sec and I'll... move it.”

He reared upright and clutched his side, scratching his temple under his hat with his other hand as he eyed the statue. There was one in the village nearest the family homestead but it didn't look anything like this. Eroded and missing half the torso, face and a leg, it looked like somebody got mad and took a few swipes at it. It was made of wood, too, and not nearly as realistic as this. The wooden version had always creeped him out as a kid, but this one... Purple marble, like woah. And if this was even remotely what Xanth looked like... “Man, you're hot.”

Bending again to nudge the bear into the dish properly with his fingers, Kiel decided that was enough of a tribute and stood back up again. Touching the rim of his hat with a finger in a lazy salute, he grinned up at the statue. “Like, seriously, man. Thanks. Bye!”

And as it turned out, all that running meant he had plenty of time to take a leisurely stroll back the way he'd come. Haha!
