Alexshire is a city-state straddling the River Cora. It is made up of the City of Alexandria, a couple of hamlets, and 300 square miles of farmland. The rich district (known as New Alexandria) houses some 5,000 of the city's wealthiest merchants and officials, and was built around Elysia's main portal.

The bistro wasn't really that busy, today. Sabrina was tasked with next to nothing, and instead was stuck on pan-cleaning duty. Being on the lowest step on the kitchen hierachy, since all she made were soups and the like, she was also given tasks that nobody else wanted to do when there was free time to be had. She had done some waitressing for them at one point, when business was low in the summer, and that had given disastrous results. She had salvaged her job only because of her newfound talent to create light and pleasing dishes - though she wanted a promotion.

Her income was comfortable enough that she could live without many problems, except here and there with the bills, but not so that she was in poverty. She hadn't received any alarming eviction notices, anyway, so she supposed that that was good enough to call herself not in need of anything. Despite this, it would be nice if she could rise up to some sort of proper chef. Being the soup-girl in the kitchen, and the youngest, meant that her colleagues tended to boss her around and ask her to do jobs they couldn't do.

Still. She was getting somewhere.

“Sabrina, you might as well go. There's nothing else to do.” She could have flung herself down onto the tiles of the stuffy kitchen and kissed her boss's feet, but, thinking that may or may not have hindered her chance at a promotion, she instead chose to thank him politely, grab her things from her locker (changing from her uniform into a pair of tight jeans and a pretty little white blouse) and walk out casually. Once outside, out the back where the scraps were hurled, she laughed and danced about a bit before coughing and calmly composing herself. She would never live it down if anybody saw that.

Sabs swung her bag over her shoulder and headed out into the street, the pavements scarce of people and shops beginning to close. Business seemed to be slow for everybody, apparently, and it was... what? 4pm? Normally, she didn't get off until 6, but hey, her boss was kind, and she was tired. She'd just have to make up the hours later, to meet her quota. But, not to worry, she thought, as she stopped briefly to check her hair in a shop window. She could do that, easy.

Kiel would, like, swear the box was hissing at him. Wrapped in pretty paper and quite sturdy, it had been, like, shoved at him by a blushing young man who'd paid him extra to make sure it got right into the recipient's hands. “It's harmless,” he'd been assured, “but be careful with it, okay?”

From this, Kiel had, like, deduced that:
  • the box was a gift,
  • the recipient was a chick, and
  • the chick was the guy's girlfriend or, like, intended girlfriend.
That, coupled with the odd way the weight of the box seemed to, like, shift all by itself - and the strange hissing - Kiel also deduced that there was, like, a Xanth-damned SNAKE in the box.

Kiel didn't like snakes. Well, he wasn't, like, scared of them or anything, but, like, he was pretty sure they didn't, like, belong in boxes, especially he suddenly found himself, like, totally responsible for it.

So, like, he was running extra fast today to get rid of his package because, like, there was no way he wanted it any longer than absolutely necessary.

“Waugh oof!” Clatter bang wallop.

That's what happened when a courier ran top speed, and a chick forced him to dodge her by stopping right in front of him. A pink redredred-eyed 'Varian sprawled on his back with one foot in an overturned trash can, his hat sitting on his chest instead of his head, and an open box with an angel snake crawling out of it.

Tucking a lock of dark hair behind one of her ears, Sabrina failed to notice that she had conveniently placed herself in the way of somebody. Had she been indulged with this anecdote, she would have panicked and dived Mission Impossible style out of the way. She was just that cool, and so obviously used to playing it calm. But, people who were sprinting at full speed made her kind of nervous.

There was a loud, slapstick sound, and then, startled, she turned to find the source of the noise. Sabrina looked down to see the dude who'd been hitting on her at the party, and then stood her up when she'd stood around the drinks table later (as far as she knew, anyway), on the floor. On his back. Were they setting some kind of pattern here?

“Uhhhh.” She didn't hold grudges, he had probably missed her, but she liked him and would like to be friends with him. Or something. In any case, she would have offered a hand to help him up, but there was another source of commotion. Some sort of snake that she'd never seen before. Now, she knew that she had some sort of Nymphical ability to tame animals, but she'd never really tried it out. It worked on Eva, when she was being rowdy, but Eva had grown used to her and learned to obey (the term being used loosely) her.

The snake attracted her attention more than Kiel did - people were powerwalking away from the scene -, and she crouched down warily, keeping a few feet in between herself and the reptile. “Hey there, little guy.” She felt stupid talking to a snake, but she was a Nymph and she was supposed to have an affinity with animals. “Uhhh. I'm a Nymph. Yeah.” Awkwardly, she stretched out a hand toward it, a stupid move. She had no idea as to the nature of the animal, or the disposition or anatomy or defenses. So... she hoped her reflexes were in tip-top shape.

“Hey, I'm not little! I just look - Oh, hi.” Hands planted behind him as he shoved himself up into an upright position, Kiel squinted at the pretty brunette who'd caused his accident, pouting. “Don't just stand there, man, like, pick it up before it flies of or something. It's harmless, like, unless it bites you. Like, it's not venomous or anything, just has sharp fangs. I'm supposed to, like, deliver it to this chick on the other side of town, some kind of present, you know? Not accepting packages from that guy in future, not unless they're, like, wrapped up good and tight!” He said all this as he got to his feet and brushed himself off, one petulant eye on the snake and the other on the girl.

“You stood me up, man,” he accused, sticking his tongue out at her. “Like, I went to the drinks table and you weren't there. I waited for, like, ever. I mean, if you didn't want to spend time with me then you could have just, like, said no, you know. Kinda used to rejection here.”

Sabrina took his advice and awkwardly grabbed the snake, unsure as to whether she was hurting it, and having no intention of finding out yet. She picked up the box and slid the snake back inside, then scanned the area to find the lid. Upon locating it, she shoved it back on and smoothed out the nice wrapping paper. And then dumbly stood there as she was accused of standing him up. What?

She'd never been stood up before, nor actually been asked for drinks. But seriouslyyyy. She'd never intended to stand him up, in fact, she had been a little miffed when she had thought that she herself had been stood up. It was okay though. Unless he was making up an excuse for himself - which she didn't think he was - then it was okay.

“I did not reject you! I waited there 'cause I really did want to spend time with you. I mean, I wandered around for a bit, and then I hung around the drinks table for ages and you didn't turn up. So I assumed you'd stood me up.” She paused and looked down at the box, then back up to the Dracovari, offering a hand to help him up. “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. And I'm, uh, sorry about stopping in your way.” She smiled, proposing peace. “We cool?”

Kiel blinked at her. “Huh, wah? For sers?” Struck dumb for a second, he looked at the neatly re-wrapped snake and shook his head. If she'd been waiting, and he'd been waiting, how had they missed each other? “But, like, well, I did go to the food tables a few times,” he admitted, wondering if that was how it had happened. He'd waited as long as he could, but he kept getting hungry.

“Haha, well, cool, yeah, sorry. Sorry for, like, accusing you, you know. I'm kinda used to rejection so, like, I just figured that's what happened.” Holding out his hands to take the snake box back, Kiel grinned. “But, like, did you have fun the rest of the party? The food was, like, awesome, for sers. I ran out of tokens, though, haha. But, man, I was glad that anka was scared off, you know? I guess it was just hungry and, like, I get that, but, like, it was still kinda freaky.

So where are you headed, anyway? Maybe I can walk with you or something but, like, I gotta deliver this.”

Sabrina offered him the box, pressing it into his hands and then taking a small step back. “I was going home, to my apartment, since I just got off from work. It's in the direction you were running before you swerved to avoid me.” She swung her back over her shoulder, flattened a few loose strands of hair that were sticking out, and turned back to the Dracovari.

She hadn't rejected him. He was real cute, and nice, too, judging by what he'd shown her, and she probably wasn't going to reject him unless he made her mad. She was a nightmare when she was mad. However, he was proving to be worth her time. Even if they were creating a pattern whenever they met, apparently.

Continuing the way she had been walking before the beginning of their encounter, Sabs assumed that Kiel would follow, and began to converse animatedly. “Anyway, I didn't get to taste the food. It did look pretty good, though, but I'd just gotten back from visiting my family so I didn't have a headstart or anything and I had nooo idea that the party was on until I got there. And yeah, the anka was pretty freaky, but it was pretty hungry so there wasn't any need for serious action, was there? Plus, it wasn't causing any real harm.”

She caught herself, hardly realising that she had been ranting, and looked down at the floor, while simultaneously tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. “I noticed that your eyes have changed colour, did you choose a sept? I mean, I don't particularly know much about 'Vari, but I knew that you had to pick a sept. What's yours, then?”

“Oh, cool, haha, I'll walk with you for a bit.” Putting action to words, he swept a formal bow and grinned, then walked beside her. She was going slower than he was used to walking by himself and, like, he was so energetic today that he found himself practically jogging on the spot, turning sideways to face her and then walking forwards for a bit, sideways and forwards, sideways and forwards, just to, like, keep pace with her.

“Ah, yeah, I think people kinda overreacted, I guess,” he acknowledged, giving her a self-deprecating smile since, like, he'd been one of the people overreacting. See, like, he'd just seen a big beast going after his food and been, like, woah, man, but in hindsight, yeah.

“Haha, yeah, I'm, like, Rutilus now, you know? Red eyes, haha, means I'm a warrior, babe.” He grinned. “I have, like, a sword and everything, see?” Shoving the snake-box under one arm as he forgot momentarily what was in it, he used his now free hand to clutch the hilt of his katana and tug it partway out of its sheathe to show her. “My boss made it. Awesome, right? Got it half-price 'cause I'm, like, totally his slave now. He's such a hard taskmaster,” he mourned enthusiastically, pulling an exaggeratedly depressed face. “Haha, my family wanted me to go, like, I dunno. Green or something, like, you know? But, like, I hate studying. I mean, Blue was definitely out, right since birth, haha. Seeing Tad bury his nose in the books, ew, man. I mean, I guess that's not really because of his Sept, he's just like that anyway, but, yeah. Like, the other Septs are all a bit too academic, you know? I dunno, like, yeah. I always just figured going Red was my best bet. I probably wouldn't have bothered, like, I dunno. Maybe eventually, but I really want a dragon of my own, you know?

But, like, wait, wait. Let me guess your element, right? Haha, nhn.”
Poking his temple with his free hand, having let his sword slide back into its sheathe during the beginning of his answer, Kiel looked at her seriously, pretending like he was a mind-reader or something. “Haha, I'm guessingggggg... nnnnnnnnnnnhn. Nereid, right? Little spitfire? Haha, am I right?”

Sabrina laughed at Kiel and watched him proceed into his speech, smiling and listening intently. She liked him. He made her laugh, and sure, what had first caused them to meet was the fact that he was attracted to her, but he was cute. Still, though, she had seen men like him on TV, and they always managed to run off to another pretty girl.

Or maybe she just watched too many soap operas.

As he guessed her element, she smiled playfully before answering. “Oh, man, is that what I come across as? Maybe I picked the wrong element. I'm a Dryad. You know, flora and the Earth and all that. My dad was a Nereid, and so is one of my brothers, but they always had really bad tempers. My twin brother is an Ayad, and my other brother is a Nyad. My mom was a Nyad, all gentle and mild and all that.”

Sabs hardly remembered her, but that was one of the details that always stuck in her mind. That she was a Nyad, and that she was gentle. But their dad always repeated that, as if trying to make it stick in the minds of his children.

“So, do you come from a big family, too?”

“Aw, man.” Kiel pouted. “I totally thought you were Nereid. Not, like, 'cause you're bad-tempered or anything, you know, but just 'cause, like, I dunno. You seem kinda sassy to me, man, you know? Dryads are cool, though. Like, there's a few living in the mountains where I'm from and, like, they work together with Nereid to protect the villages from the volcanoes and stuff, you know? It's cool that, like, you have so many different elements in your house, though, 'cause, like, you're not pressed into any one element, you know?” His situation was kind of different but he'd felt kind of forced into Rutilus just because, like, he just kind of lacked the mental skills required for the other three septs. Like, you know, Viridis and Aurumus didn't need to be total geniuses or anything but they did require a certain level of mental faculty and concentration that Kiel just didn't have.

Even then, he was lucky that none of his family had pressed him into any particular Sept like he'd heard so many other 'Vari talk about when he was waiting to perform his Ritual. They'd just been happy for him to do whatever made him happy.

“Hahaha, oh, man, the biggest, for sers. Like, I have two brothers and three sisters. The guys and Lacey are all older than me and Pheebs is way smarter and, like, you know, more mature than me, so, like, you know, they always treated me like the baby until Chlo-Chlo was born. Hahahaha, I get to play big bro now, it's awesome. You wanna see a picture, man?” He was rummaging in his pockets for his wallet before he'd finished asking, and flipped it open to loose a fold-out accordion-style wallet that was jam-packed with pictures of his family.

“This one's RayRay and his family. This goofy one's Tad and that's his dragon in the background,” he introduced, giggling at the snapshot he'd caught of Tad's dragon rearing up with his jaws wide open and posing just so, as if he was about to gobble Tad up from the head down. “Chlo's so pretty, man, she could totally be a Nymph, right? Hahaha.” The youngest Taskel's hair was hidden beneath a pink beanie complete with white cat's ears and making rabbit ears behind Kiel's head as he held the camera out to capture them both, his own hair spraying out from beneath a multicoloured flat cap. “This one's my mom, dad, Laces and her hubby. His moustache is kinda freaky, right? He looks kind of like he's got a caterpillar under his nose, hahahahahaha, but he puts up with Lacey's crap so, like, he's gotta be cool, right? She's so bossy, man, hahaha.”

Kiel continued to introduce the photographs as they walked, until he'd reached the last one and then flicked them back into his wallet and grinned. “You got any photos, man?”

[d=white]((OOC:[/d] Ah, I can cut this down a lot if you're not comfortable with the amount of talking Kiel's just done. <_< Sorry there's not much description/naming going on with the photos, I haven't developed his family much yet.[d=white]))[/d]

Sabs looked, with interest, at the photos being shown to her. She listened with amusement, agreeing with him when she deemed it necessary, and letting her eyes drift over each snapshot. He had a huge family. She hadn't expected it to be so... extensive.

It had never occured to Sabrina that she didn't make much of an effort with your family. But seeing Kiel talk to her so animatedly about his many siblings, and show her his photos. She had a few in her purse, but not as many as that, and it made her cringe a little as she sheepishly took her purse out of her bag and opened it. In it, there were not enough photos to match up to Kiel's, only three: the first depicting herself aged sixteen, her eldest, blond haired brother, her dark haired twin brother, her middle dark haired brother, and her dark haired, easy-going, middle-aged father. The second showed her mother and her father, smiling and holding hands, dressed in wedding clothes, recently married.

The third was her undisputed favourite, it was a photo snapped of all four children and both parents on a picnic blanket in a country park, sunhats on, stripes of suncream painted across everyone's faces, like warpaint. She showed him all the photos, commenting as she did so. “These are my brothers. This is Stan, this is Zack, this is Will. This is my dad, and this is my mom. Isn't she beautiful? She looks so delicate. And she's so pretty. I don't have as much family as you do, but we're pretty closely-knit. Maybe not so much as before. I mean, before, we lived in the same dimension. So, it's kind of problematic. But I visit when I can. I guess that, as long as I keep up visiting, I'm not going to drift away from them.” She shrugged. Family meant a lot, but everybody had different lives, now. Even though she knew that her dad was always anticipating their next visits.

Brightening up, she smiled. “So, what hopes do you have for yourself as a Dracovari? I'm sure you'll make an awesome Rutilus.”

“Oh cool,” Kiel said, reaching out to touch the photos as she showed them. “Like, yeah, man, your mom's gorgeous. But dude, like, you're a twin? That's awesome, man, I never met a twin before.”

Stepping back a little to walk normally, Kiel grinned. “I dunno, man, you know? I only did the ritual 'cause, like, I want a dragon of my own soooooo bad. Like, you know, both my parents and, like, Laces and Tad all have bonded and it's just, like, you know. Like, Pheebs went unbonded but, like, even that's awesome. I never saw her in action like the others, though, but can you imagine having access to, like, a hundred different dragons or something crazy like that?” Putting on a fake girly voice, he clutched at his heart. “Like, oh no, a damsel in distress!” He switched to a low-pitched voice and bulked his arms out in an exaggerated "tank" pose, trying to emulate his dad. “Don't worry, never fear, for I can summon... duhn duhn duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhnnnnn!” And now a crazy commercial voice and a broad grin. “Just the right dragon for the job! Hahahahahaha.”

“But yeah, man, seriously,” he continued, back in his normal mode. “I don't wanna be anything special, you know? Even though, like, I totally am, hahahaha.” He grinned and winked at her. “I do kinda plan to get me this ginorrrrrrrrrrmous sword or something, though, and, like, attach some griffin feathers or something so I can wield it, and just, like, go home and see the look on my bros' faces, though, hahaahha. They'd be censored kittens, for sers! You got any plans for your, you know, like, Dryadness?”

Her 'Dryadness' wasn't anything impressive. Sure, she'd made progress, and she could withstand leaving her element a little longer than before. Actually, that made quite an impact. She was a lot more competent, too. It was her opinion that, when she'd came to Elysia, she was something of a pathetic excuse for a Nymph. But, now that she'd adapted to Elysian life, she was more experienced. And she wasn't ashamed to tell Kiel about her Nymphly abilities.

“Well... it's really cool that all your siblings have some sort of ability. None of my siblings really like, focus on being a Nymph, you know? My twin is at university, which is some sort of further education, on Earth. And my other brothers are just living leisurely. But yeah. Just like you guys can get bonded to a dragon, we can be bonded to animals. Uh, my companion is a little Fae Squirrel. He's real cute. As a Dryad, though, I want to be able to control my element more, you know? There are loads of cool things I can do, but that's what I want to do more of, along with being able to tame animals. That sounds real cool. And then there's this thing, where we can't leave our element for a certain amount of time, otherwise we get sick.”

Sabs stopped, realising that she was rambling, and smiled sheepishly. She just had a lot to say, today, apparently. “Where do you live? Or is that intrusive?”

Kiel listened intently, focusing all his energy on, like, concentrating on what the chick was saying. He didn't want to seem like he couldn't pay attention or something, but it was kinda tough. Not because what she was saying was boring 'cause, like, he found people fascinating at their best and their worst, but just 'cause, like, Kiel just couldn't keep his attention on any one thing for very long.

“Like, woah, for sers? I mean, like, I heard about the companion thing but, like, the only Nymphs I know are, like, Wardens so, like, you know. I never saw a fae squirrel,” he added, looking her up and down as if she was hiding it in her pocket or something. “I totally want a pet of my own, like, you know. But, like, I dunno, I dunno what to get, you know?”

“Hahahaha, as long as you're not, like, a stalker or something, haha. I'm from Dardanos originally, like, awesome place, man. Even the volcanoes are cool, hahaha. But, like, I'm living here in the city, being all, like, standing on my own two feet kinda thing, you know? Got me a place on the river, which is awesome, man. Like, you know, my family lives on a farm so I'm, like, total country boy, hahaha. It's a bit run-down,” like, a lot, “but, like, when my slave masters lets me off work I'm all over it. Kinda ruined my best jeans, though, but, like, that'll teach me not to use a paintbrush to swat flies, you know? Oh, hey, it's this way, okay?”

Listening to him ramble was comforting. Normally, she would be the one to ramble, with her companion sliding in little anecdotes and observances every now and then, but now there was almost equal rambling stemming from each party. Plus, Sabs didn't even need to encourage Kiel, like with normal people she spoke to, so it was nice to be able to talk equally for once. Maybe it was just her, though. Maybe, once she got going, she couldn't - or wouldn't - stop. The same applied to the Dracovari, apparently.

Good.

“Oh, yeah, I'm nearly home, anyway.” Sabrina followed him absent-mindedly, hitching her back up onto her shoulder, and then stumbling over the pavement. She was reluctant to leave his company, which she was enjoying, but in a few blocks, she'd be home. And she had other duties, like Hamish and Eva. And, she was trying to improve her Sylvan, which, quite frankly, consisted of a few words. So... no distractions.

“A pet, huh? I have a Lemur. A ring-tailed lemur. But she's just my pet, and she's really wild. I hear the pet shop has loaaaaads of pets. Why don't uhhh, you go down sometime? I bet the shopkeeper will know what animal best suits you if you tell them what you're looking for.” A pause to inhale oxygen before she passed out. “Hey, I'm not a countrygirl, but I'm a towngirl. I was raised in a little American town in the country, all small and quaint and everybody knows everybody, that sort of thing.”

She stopped outside of her apartment building, hesitating. “So... this is me.”

“Ah, man, a lemur. Dude, that's awesome. They're totally weird, man. But you can, like, practise on her, right? You said something about taming animals, right?” See, he could listen, even when he was gabbing a mile a minute.

“I guess I could, but, like, I don't really know what I'm looking for, you know? Like, anything'd be awesome, man. My boss has this, like, awesome cool owl, man, but Zeph's like, crazy strict so, like, he's trained it and everything. I dunno that I could do that, but, like, you know. I might pop over, though, just 'cause, like, maybe they'd let me pet their stock, hahahaha.”

Realising that Sabrina was pointing out their walk together was almost over, Kiel slowed down a little bit, adjusting the snake-box under his arm. Like, his boss would probably, like, tell him off for slacking or something, but, like, he was the fastest dude on the payroll (for sers!), so he could cut Kiel a little slack now and then, right?

“America's, like... Earth, right? That's so cool.” Eyeing her like he'd suddenly realised she had two heads or green skin or something, Kiel grinned. “I've never been to Earth, man. My dad's all, like, hardcore traditional and, like, my gramps remembers the migration, like, stories about it anyway, so, like, they're all "humans gah!" avoidy, you know?”

He'd walked a few paces, still nattering, before he realised Sabrina had, like, stopped, and backtracked, feeling suddenly awkward. Like, he kind of felt like he'd missed the boat with this one, like, you know, like every other girl he'd hit on. Like, maybe if they'd met up again at the party, but, like, he was cool with just being friends. Like, maybe that was why he could never hook up, you know? Chronic "just friends"-itis or something.

“Aw, 'kay. I gotta deliver this before it, like, tries to eat me or something.” Lifting the box slightly under his arm, Kiel winked. “Like, but it was good catching up, you know? I'm glad you didn't, like, stand me up or something, hahahaha. Hey, hey, like, I know you're a Nymph and everything but, like, you should totally stop by the slavedriver's store, like, he makes awesome cool weapons but he does armour too so, like, you know. If you're gonna be practising your stuff on animals you should, like, totally have protection, right? Like, a glove or something, I dunno.” He didn't really have a clue what she'd be doing, but he had an image of her out in the forest surrounded by animals and a bird with talons landing on her arm or something, so, like, some kind of gauntlet like falconers had would be cool, right? “And, like, gimme your number or something, right, 'cause, like, when I get my house redecorated I'm totally having, like, a house-warming party or something, you know?” As he said this, his free hand dove into a pocket in search of his COM.

Sabrina would refuse to be the chick who called constantly and annoyed him. Though, she wasn't actually one to actually use her cell. Still. Having a new friend would be nice, and plus, his idea about the gauntlet-y glove-y thing was a good one at that. She obediently fished around her bag for her phone, pushing aside her chef's whites, her sunscreen and several other essentials (for her anyway) that she never left the house without.

Maybe she didn't get out enough, either. She could just like, phone him, and be all, “Hey, you fancy getting some coffee? You drink coffee, right?” Then she could at least say that her social life existed. Usually, her time was spent at work, in her favourite haunts, like by the riverbank, or studying. She was a bright student, perhaps not as intellectual as some, but she was clever and willing to learn. She just had nobody to learn from... But that was digressing.

“Okay, here's my number.” She fired it to him off and then jammed her phone back in her bag, smiling. That way, if he wanted to keep in touch, then he'd have to phone her, and that would mean that she would truly find out if he enjoyed her company. Plus, she'd go around to the smithy, like he said. Maybe after a few days, anyway, cause she didn't want to seem desperate or anything.

Leaning in, she took a step forward and stood on tiptoe to press her lips against his cheek confidently. “It's been nice talking to you, Kiel. Um. See you around.” With a smile, she pushed the door to her apartment building open, and strolled in. Yep. That was smoothly done.

Ooc: I checked you player limits... So I think that's okay. If not, feel free to smack me and then I'll edit. Also, Sabsy has left the thread.
