Elysian Fields: First Date - Elysian Fields

Nirim

Nirim is a planet almost twice as large as Earth, with as much diversity of terrain and climate as can be found on Earth or Elysia. Many of them are unreachable on foot and uninhabitable for humanoids, others simply wild and untamed, but none are safe for any but the dragons who reign here.

To keep this land for themselves, the dragons forbade portals, permitting travel to and from their realm solely by teleportation (on dragon-back). Nirim taxis cost between ζ50 and ζ200 just for a one-way trip.

Travelling out of the White City, the only sanctuary afforded the Dracovari, is illegal.

Like, normally when they walked together, Kiel would be, like, a mile ahead and would keep returning to Zeph's side to blab about what he'd seen before, like, taking off again since, like, Kiel couldn't keep Zeph's slowpoke pace. It was a bit like the dude was walking his dog without a leash, and the dog would run off to bring back a stick or something.

But, like, since they were on a date - holy Xanth, man, Kiel was actually on a date, man! - he wanted to be, like, right at Zeph's side. Like, he kinda wanted to hold hands, too, but, like, 1) that was a totally girly thing to do, like, right? and 2) it was probably, like, a bit soon to just, like, reach out and grab the guy's hand, you know? But, like, Kiel still did it, only he was also using the gesture to try and hurry Zeph along, pulling on the big guy's hand rather than, like, walking along side by side, hand in hand.

Kiel totally, like, almost forgot the directions to the steak house in his eagerness to get there, but dropped lucky when he saw the sign totally by chance (like, Zeph might have been directing him or something, but Kiel was talking a mile a minute again so, like, he wasn't aware of it).

He, like insisted on a table near the decorative doors that led out onto the roof garden, partly 'cause, like, he so wanted to see the dragons but, like, also 'cause it made for a nicer date setting. Like, Tad was always talking about how chicks wanted the best seats, you know, and that, like, the key to a successful date was to, like, impress her or something, so, like, even though Zeph was a dude, Kiel figured the same principles kind of applied anyway. He even, like, held the guy's chair out for him, giggling a bit as he did so.

“Hey, hey, boss, look! That's a wyrm, right? Dude, look at those horns, man. He looks wicked. Hey, hey, you want dessert, man, right?” They'd already ordered and, like, Kiel was sooooo glad payday was, like, only a few days away 'cause, like, his overdraft was gonna totally hate him, man, but, like, it was so worth it, you know? “That dude at the dojo was right about the waitresses, man, hahahaha. Like, I bet Tad eats here all the time, you know?” His brother actually lived in the city (like, the only reason Kiel hadn't been to see him any of the times Zeph brought him to Nirim, like, aside from not wanting to subject his boss to his brother, was 'cause the older Taskel was in serious study mode and, like, totally camped out at the library or something) so, like, no way he'd not know about this place. But, like, even though Kiel thought most of the waitresses were totally hot, he was way more interested in Zeph, you know?

Like, their game of footsie, which had, like, become a habit when they vied for foot space under the table, had totally taken on a new meaning. Like, Kiel had felt weird before if their legs pressed together, but, like, he was totally doing it deliberately, now, man. But, like, other than that, their "date" felt kinda like it wasn't the first. Like, they'd eaten out together before, you know? And, like, they weren't really doing anything different, like, the whole thing felt so familiar, but, like, that was good 'cause, like, Kiel would totally have a meltdown from nerves otherwise.

“So, like, you know. We're on a date so you gotta tell me something about yourself, man.” Kiel wouldn't push it, but, like, the dude knew pretty much everything there was to know about him, and Kiel was totally curious about Zeph's life. Like, you know, the guy was old, man, he'd done stuff and Kiel was, like, one hundred percent sure most of it was awesome stuff, for sers.

Kiel was acting like a puppy. Actually, no, a puppy on a speed potion. Maybe more than one. Yea. That might work. Regardless, the kid was dragging Zephyr this way and that and the man was kind of surprised they'd reached any kind of restaurant, let alone the one they'd been headed towards. Once inside Kiel's eyes darted about the building. Zephyr almost wanted to smack the kid when Kiel pulled out Zephyr's chair but indulged the misplaced effort instead. Zephyr had to keep reminding himself that Kiel was much newer to all of this than he was.

He did, however, cast one of the harshest glares he'd ever given to anyone as Kiel ogled the waitresses. Zephyr understood attraction but as far as the man was concerned that ship had sailed the moment Kiel had asked him to dinner. Making sure he ordered on the cheaper side, for the kid's sake, and also made a mental note to secretly slip a bonus into the boy's next paycheck.

As Kiel asked him about his past, though, Zephyr froze up a bit. His past was long and tumultuous, with the very few happy moments overshadowed by harsher times. “W... What do you want to know?” he asked, hoping for a bit more direction. Zephyr's life had been far too long for him to be able to answer a question that broad with any efficiency, let alone ease.

Meep. Like, okay. Ogling chicks while on a date with a dude was a totally bad idea: Check. Probably also while on a date with chicks, but, like, Kiel had a hard time imagining any of the girls he'd want to date pulling off a glare that scary, man.

“Wah, I dunno, man. Like, everything, you know?” Sitting back to give the waitress some space and, like, totally deliberately focused on Zeph so the dude wouldn't glare at him again, Kiel accidentally on purpose brushed his knee against Zeph's under the table and grinned around a fry. “Like, you were a big baby, right? Not, like, a crybaby but, like, way big, man. My mom said I only weighed, like, five pounds but, like, RayRay was a ten-pounder, the freak.” Thanking the waitress with a quick smile, Kiel shuffled his plate and glass and, like, chowed down. “Where did you grow up, man? Where were you born? Hahahaha, did you run around starkers as a kid too, or, like, is that just some, like, eccentric perversity you picked up in your old age? Where did you get Spirit, man? Oh oh, how did you meet Slythe? I mean, like, ritual, duh, but, like, was he the first dragon you summoned or, like, do you guys act like that 'cause, like, he was your second choice or something? And, like, why don't you like riding him, he's awesome, man. Why do you like steak so much? Wah, dude!” Flinching away from the rattling window as a wyvern shot past at full speed, Kiel laughed at his reaction, eyes wide.

“Hey, hey, boss, I never asked, like, do you have family? You know, nearby or anything? 'Cause, like, I'm always talking about mine and you never, like, mentioned parents or brothers or anything.” Zeph kinda acted like a loner so it was hard to tell if he just didn't have family or was disconnected from them, but Kiel realised that not everyone was as lucky as he was. He might call his brothers "freak" and his sisters "nosy" or whatever, but, like, Kiel loved them all to distraction and, like, he knew they'd all be there for him in a heartbeat if he needed them. If they found out he was dating a dude with no family of his own, they'd totally adopt him.

Zephyr groaned as Kiel asked way too many questions. The kid was too nosy for his own good. Not that Zephyr really blamed the boy, if they really were a pair now then sooner or later Kiel would learn the answers to all of his questions but it was far too much to go into at one time. Zephyr mainly allowed it to continue because he liked the feeling of Kiel's leg when it brushed against his own and Zephyr had moved his legs around a bit to get generally solid contact with the kid. The last question, however, stood out a lot.

“I don't have any family...” Zephyr said, “not anymore.” Looking away from Kiel, Zephyr glared absently at the ground for a moment before looking up. Slowly he began to explain how he'd grown up. About the clan in the Apolli mountains and his father. About how the censored had banished him for not murdering someone and given him the scar on his face at the same time.

As he spoke Zephyr's face and body went stony and cold. So much so, actually, Zephyr hadn't paid any attention to the salad that was sitting in front of him, fork absently poised in the air. He didn't think about his past very often, and this was a large reason why. It made him vulnerable. Far too vulnerable for his tastes.

“Like, woah.” Kiel studied Zeph's scar with new interest and curiosity. He'd listened with fascination as Zeph talked about his upbringing, a little scared too 'cause, like, he couldn't imagine that kind of childhood. He'd always been surrounded by people he knew for damn sure loved him, if not outright adored him, and while he'd known logically that, like, not everyone had that, he'd always had a hard time imagining what life would be like at the other end of the scale. Like, but it explained a lot about Zeph, man, like, why the dude didn't seem to trust or like anyone, why he was always glaring and snarling and stuff.

If Zeph had been, like, pretty much anyone else, Kiel would have slipped into the chair beside him and totally glomped him to death or something, but, like, the way Zeph had shut down made him think that was a bad idea. Like, the dude wasn't the touchy-feely type, you know? Unless, well, you know, that stuff back at the dojo, but Kiel wasn't comfortable using that to comfort him or something. Maybe he would sooner or later, but, like, you know, their relationship was so new and all.

But, like, he couldn't just sit there silently, either. Kiel didn't have it in him to not react, but he was trying damned hard to be quiet(er) 'cause, like, it seemed like Zeph needed that. But it seemed like he needed a total jolt off of Memory Lane too, so, like, Kiel pressed his leg against Zeph's in lieue of a hug and, like, popped a fry into his mouth, injecting dismissiveness into his tone as he said, like, “Dude, family like that, man. You shoulda, like, sacrificed them to Xanth or something. Like, I dunno if she'd accept them, but, like, you know. The volcanoes'd make awesome funeral pyres, you know?”

Kiel's gaze twitched from the dude's empty fork to his absent stare and back again, then grabbed Zeph's fork hand to prod it into his salad, stretching across the table. “You gotta do it like this, man, hahaha,” he joked, acting like he was teaching a baby how to feed itself 'cause, like, he didn't know how else to jerk Zeph out of his doldrums but Kiel just knew he so didn't like the sad face the guy was pulling.

Zephyr was shaken from his memories as Kiel touched him. It took him a few moments to regain his stony composure but after a bit he was back to his rigid unemotional self. Ignoring Kiel's words (wasn't very hard to do since he was so used to doing that anyways) Zephyr speared a slice of cucumber, tomato and a piece or two of lettuce and raised them to his mouth. Zephyr watched Kiel as he chewed silently. He wasn't really that interested in dinner anymore, but this was mainly for Kiel because of his newness to the concept.

“So,” Zephyr said, his fork plunging through a few more bits of vegetable. “What will your family think of this?” he asked, wanting to make sure the boy knew what he was getting into. It wasn't all that uncommon for rleationships like theirs to form, especially among Rutilus. It wasn't so much about the gender, but the bond. Brotherhood and comradery were sometimes far easier to give into than love. Far more trust worthy, as well. Love was a fickle thing, but your comrades were always there despite anything. Not that these relationships happened all the time, but it would likely be no surprise to some people in his family. That sister of Kiel's didn't seem to like Zephyr too much, though.

So, like, Kiel was happy that the dude had snapped out of it, for sers, but, like, he was kinda censored that Zeph'd just ignored him. Like, he hadn't even acknowledged that Kiel's joking was for his benefit. Okay so, like, the dude ignored him pretty much all the time anyway, and it never really bothered Kiel 'cause, like, Zeph was Zeph was Zeph, you know? But, dude, like, hello! Dinner date over here, man.

Kiel didn't like the silence, and even though he was trying to be good and, like, give Zeph some space since it was kinda obvious the dude was freaked out, Kiel just wasn't the type who could sit there, utterly quiet, forever and a day, you know? And, like, it was a date, man. The dude shouldn't be ignoring him on their date, you know?

So, like, by the time Zeph finally spoke up, Kiel was kinda sulking a bit. Like, he'd been stuffing his face to try and keep his mouth shut, but the silence was really getting to him. At least, like, Zeph had started eating, although he'd totally ignored Kiel's joke which, like, okay, so it was lame, but, like, anyone else would have laughed, you know? Like, his family, anyway. Maybe Kiel had been spoiled.

“Dude, it speaks,” Kiel joked half-heartedly around a mouthful of fries, reaching for his pepsi to wash it down. “I dunno, man, I think Tad comes here, like, every day just for the chicks, hahaha,” he answered after swallowing, totally misconstruing Zeph's question. “But, like, my dad'd love this place, for sers. Like, he's a steak man like you, you know? I dunno that the girls would like it, though, like, Chlo would freak and try to rescue the cows or something.”

Open palm, insert face with moderate force. That's the action Zephyr took after he realized that Kiel had completely missed his question. The boy was a bit too oblivious for his own good sometimes. Okay, so, Zephyr was as well, but that was entirely besides the point! Sighing as the kid finished his statement, Zephyr reached his hand under the table and grabbed Kiel's knee as it pushed against him.

“Not the restaurant. What will they think of this,” Zephyr said, squeezing Kiel's knee a bit before massaging the part of Kiel's leg he could reach. “Of us,” he said, letting go of the boy's leg as the waitress came back, carrying their steaks. Zephyr took his and ignored the look of the blushing Aurumus server, not caring what her opinion of him
Spoiler
was. Thanking her, Zephyr cast a quick glare as she giggled and walked away. It wasn't that he wasn't used to the treatment. It had definitely happened before and 'Rum's were almost as bad as Pet's about things such as this.

“Dude, did you just facepalm, for sers? Like, hahahahahawah!” Totally stunned that, like, Zeph would touch him like that in a crowded restaurant, Kiel's fork clanged to his plate as his hand dove under the table to stop Zeph's from reaching any further. “Dude.” Zeph's hand had already retreated, so Kiel rubbed his leg where it had been, not really thinking about what he was doing until the waitress laughed.

“Like, wah.” Feeling like he'd been caught doing something way dirtier, Kiel snatched his hand back up to the table and looked everywhere but at Zeph, then started glancing at him, wondering what the dude was up to. Well, like, he'd wanted the guy to stop ignoring him, right? And, like, there was something kind of cool about the guy semi-seducing him in a restaurant.

“Like, I dunno, man, like, you know. My bros all think I'm gay anyway so, like, they won't be that surprised. Like, 'cause they kept shoving me at girls and it was kinda embarrassing so I told 'em I was into dudes to get them off my back but then they were shoving me at guys instead. Dude, man, do you have any idea how many gay guys there are where I live? Like, pretty much zero, man,” he answered without waiting for Zeph to respond, busily cutting up his steak. “Like, most straight guys are cool about it but a couple took major offense, man.”

“But, like, I dunno, my dad's kinda weird and my family are kinda traditional but, like, my mom'll be cool. I think they'll come around, you know? Like, hahahaha, Laces already thinks we're, like, you know, anyway, I bet she went straight home and was all, like, "dude",” he mimicked in a high-pitched girly voice, even though Lacey didn't say "dude". “"Kiel's totally got, like, a bf, man".” Kiel paused, realising what that meant. “Dude! Like, wah!” His palm mirrored Zeph's earlier gesture, slapping his forehead. “She's gonna think she was right! Like, Lacey can't ever be right, man, the world'll end or something!”

Zephyr had already finished his salad and was a decent way into the steak he'd ordered while Kiel was still speaking. He was finding it hard to get a read on how Kiel had really felt about being touched like that. Zephyr assumed he enjoyed it at least a bit given the look Kiel had passed across the table briefly. It almost made Zephyr want to leave the restaurant just then, but this was important to Kiel so Zephyr contained himself.

As the boy prattled on about his family, Zephyr ate silently. The man moved his legs further against Kiel's, sliding in his chair a bit. “It will be fine,” Zephyr said, completely oblivious to the finer intricacies of sibling rivalry. Taking another bite of his steak, not really interested in dinner anymore, Zephyr's eyes continued to look over at Kiel. “Just be firm in your approach,” he advised, also oblivious to how to handle social matters let alone family ones.

Not long had passed before Zephyr and Kiel had finished their plates. Okay, Kiel finished much faster than Zephyr the man sped up a bit in order to finish his steak. Waving the waitress down for the check, Zephyr wondered if he could get away with paying. Kiel certainly didn't have enough money to be spending on things like this and Zephyr wasn't exactly bad off. As the waitress came over Zephyr quickly grabbed the check before Kiel could. “I'll get this one, you can pay next time,” he said, pulling out his wallet and giving the needed amount plus an okay tip.

Like, Kiel was pretty sure Zeph was playing footsie with him. Like, not fake footsie in search of legroom but, like, real footsie. He was giving Kiel some serious looks too, man, but Kiel was determined to end this date properly. Like, it was a milestone or something, you know? Turn of the tide or something since, like, they'd only been boss-slave/mentor-trainee/friends up to now. Kiel figured it was important to mark the change.

“Hahaha, man, it's okay saying that, but, like, you don't my sister, man. Well, like, you do know her but you don't know her, you know? She's, like, so bossy, man, and she always thinks she's right.” Most of the time she wasn't far off the mark, and, like, okay so she'd obviously known something they didn't, but, like, he'd never live it down, for sers. And Kiel explained this, at great length, as he wolfed down his meal, even though, like, he was pretty sure Zeph wasn't really listening. Like, some of it had to sink in, though, right?

“Aw, I wanted dessert, man,” Kiel pouted eventually when Zephyr claimed the bill, pulling a face at the tip he'd left. “Like, dude, you call that a tip? Man, you gotta pay the pretty ones more, you know?” He winked at the waitress as he said this, forgetting Zeph's earlier glares, then hit the table sharply. “Dude! Hey, I was meant to be paying, wah. Like, I'm not a free-loader, you know? And, like, this was my deal, like, I asked you, I'm supposed to pay, right?” Pinching the notes between his thumb and forefinger, Kiel shoved Zeph's money across the table towards him, patting down his pockets in search of his wallet with his other hand. “Just a second, man,” he asked the waitress, who had smiled when he'd winked but was now standing there looking a bit impatient as he used both hands to pat himself down. “Like, dude, it's in one of these, oh hey, Zeph, you want a mint? Ahah!”

Grinning triumphantly, Kiel yanked out a couple of bills and handed them straight to the waitress. “Dude, like, thanks for the service, man, my steak was awesome. Who's your supplier? 'cause, like, my bro's dragon might be interested. Oh, wait, no, like, my bro would buy the cows, I wouldn't tell Neko where the farm is or anything 'cause, like, you know. Dragon stomachs, you know?”

Zephyr scowled as Kiel fought him. He didn't want to upset the kid but still, Zephyr was definitely in the better position to pay for things than Kiel. After all, Kiel was still working two jobs. Zephyr could employ Kiel full time at the smithy, but he doubted that would make the boy happy at all. The kid liked to move and working seven to noon every weekday seemed to work for him for the most part.

“Fine,” he said, scooting his chair out a bit in order to stand as the waitress walked away. “Let's go, then, I'll call Slythe,” he said, beginning to walk away as he summoned the dragon. Once the two were outside, Zephyr hoped that Kiel wouldn't remember his desire to play in the snow. Zephyr wasn't really interested in it (after all, he'd spent centuries living through winters such as this, and snow lost it's wondrous appeal after a while) so he beckoned Slythe to come right outside the restaurant.

As the opened the door, Slythe appeared, eying them both and then the restaurant as Derina teleported to the dragon's face to give him hugs and kisses. “What is this?” he asked them both telepathically. “I didn't leave you here,” he continued, the dragon, more oblivious than Zephyr. “Just take us back to Kiel's house,” Zephyr said, stepping towards the beast in order to mount it.

Kiel had remembered his desire to play in the snow, especially when they got outside, but, like, Zeph was kind of in a hurry or something. Like, Kiel didn't think he'd seen the guy move that fast before, you know? And, like, Slythe was waiting for them when they got outside, which kinda deflated any hopes Kiel had of persuading his boss to "play play play!"

Still, Kiel was Kiel, a major kid at heart, so, like, as he answered Slythe's question with “Dude, Slythe, man, we've just been on our first date, man, how awesome is that? Like, I know, right? Hahaha, I see Derry's awake, man,” he made like a snow ninja, gathering up a fist full of the chilly white stuff. His hands were already pretty pink and freezing in the short time it took for Zeph to turn his back, but, like, Kiel thought it'd be so worth it.

Putting his training to good use, Kiel pressed a finger to his lips to shush Slythe and Derry and, like, totally let her rip right at Zeph's back.

Zephyr glare at Slythe as he snickered about Kiel's statement. The dragon stopped fairly quickly as he realized it wasn't a joke, and Zephyr proceeded to climb onto the Dragon's back until suddenly something hard and cold shattered against his back. Turning his head in a flash, Zephyr scowled at the boy lightly.

“Damn you, Kiel!” He said, jumping down from the dragon. There was no hatred and not really any anger in his voice as he moved incredibly quickly to tackle Kiel into the snow. As soon as Zephyr made contact he turned Kiel over so that Zephyr was more or less straddling the boy in the snow. Leaning down, Zephyr kissed Kiel haphazardly as he grabbed a fistful of snow and moved to shove it down Kiel's pants. “Now let's go,” he said, kissing Kiel again just for the taste of it before getting up and heading back to Slythe as Derina snickered from her perch on Slythe's back.

“Oh censored!” Kiel's eyes near popped out of his head and he bolted, his arms waving as he yelled and giggled, like, trying to hold on to his hat which, like, totally flew off as he was tackled face first into the snow. “Waumph.”

He was still giggling as Zeph turned him over, like, at least until the dude kissed him and then he was kind of too preoccupied to notice what the dude was up to until, like, “Wah, waugh, DUDE, crap that's cold, man!” He shimmied in the snow to try and shake the snow out of his pants, too distracted to kiss Zeph back but not trying to fend him off either.

“Wah, dude.” Like, Zeph totally shouldn't have done that. The second he was free, Kiel was up and brushing himself off, shaking his leg out and wincing a bit. A second later, he was zooming after his boss, leaping up onto Zeph's back and making like a koala so he could, like, shove his own handful of snow into Zeph's vest. “Derry, Derry, get him!”

Zephyr fell to the ground as Kiel jumped on him, not ready for the extra weight added to his own. Quickly he flipped over, causing Kiel's snow to be splayed across Zephyr's bare chest rather than his back. Now with Kiel on top of him, Zephyr reached out and pulled their bodies together, kissing him again. Zephyr was definitely not interested in a snow war right now.

Kissing Kiel for several moments, Zephyr ignored the numbness of his back as it was chilled by the snow beneath him. He had such a one track mind that when he set himself to something nothing else mattered until it was completed. A few moments into their make-out session, though, Derina poofed next to Zephyr's head an spat blobs of snow at the pairs' heads. Zephyr looked up to realize plenty of people were staring. A few men looked away in disgust as younger girls giggled and a mother guided her children away. “Get a room!” someone shouted as they walked away.

“We should go,” Zephyr said, moving to get up as soon as Kiel would get off of him.

Like, woah, man. Just, like, woah. There was definitely something seriously kinky about lying on top of a dude in the snow in public, kissing. Like, Zeph was a total perv, for sers.

“Wah, cold, cold!” Flapping his hands around his head as he was pelted with snow, Kiel scrambled after her, like, unwittingly crawling off Zeph while he was at it. She wasn't easy to grab, but, like, Kiel suddenly realised they had an audience and, like, dude. His cheeks flamed a bit as he shot to his feet, glaring. “Like, dude, you wanna take a picture or something? It'd last longer, man.”

“We should go.”

Forgetting his irritation, Kiel grinned. “Like, you just want me to yourself, hahaha. Wah, my hat, where's my hat?” Scuffing across the snow to scoop it up from where it had fallen, Kiel slapped it against his thigh to brush off the snow, then dashed back to Slythe. “Me first, me first! Can I ride up front, can I, can I?” Determined that the answer should be "yes" this time, he was scrabbling to climb up onto Slythe's back by himself but not having much luck.

Zephyr brushed himself of as he stood, ignoring the still invasive stares of the onlookers and passersby. “Fine,” he said as he came up behind Kiel, grabbing his waist and helping to lift/push the kid into position. Once Kiel was up, Zephyr climbed up behind him, pushing their bodies flush against each other. After making sure Derina was wrapped securely around his neck, Zephyr wrapped his arms around Kiel's waits, letting his hands rest in front of the boy as low as the kid would allow.

“Squeeze with your legs to hold on,” Zephyr said as his fingers absently stroked Kiel's body both to calm the boy and himself. Zephyr hated flying but he definitely didn't want to say that. “Okay, let's go Slythe,” “But take it easy,” he said, adding the silent telepathic note to his partner, and within moments they were gone from Nirim and soaring down towards Kiel's house for a gentle landing.
