When Jesse took the perfume from him, Zeko allowed it, and gave her a cursory snap of a bow in thanks. Glancing toward Malik to be sure the boy was not pestering the Nymph more than she had patience for, he sniffed at the perfume she showed them and pulled a face. “Indeed, it is... special. Ah, but forgive me, ah'niss, Elysian scents are perhaps as offensive to the Zanaryan nose as vice versa, no?” He smiled politely, however, to show he meant no offense.

Malik, on the other hand, was quite adamant that, “Well, I like it, Miss Lazuli,” with a sneer in his father's direction that almost earned him another head-swat. Zozeko, running out of patience, instead rolled his eyes and waved vaguely as if he could dismiss the boy as utterly unrelated.

At the very least, Malik could take two choices instead of just one, thanks to Jesse's offer, so they would be here even longer than Zozeko had intended at this rate.

Turning away, he decided to strike up a polite conversation with the redhead who had assisted them. His earlier conversation with the shopkeeper had confused him also, but his confusion was marked by a distinct lack of interest.

“Perhaps would you know of these places also?” he enquired, holding out the list he had taken from Malik. If he could be sure of the boy's chores being completed promptly, then he could finally relax and take his shore leave as he had intended.

Lazuli was not offended at all by Zozeko's response, because scent preference was personal preference after all, but Malik's answer did make her very happy. “I shall buy it, then!” she said decisively, encouraged by Jesse's notice about the promo. It meant that she would leave the store with three total perfumes, and that meant she could bring one back home for Phen.

She moved around some more, keeping within close radius to Nero and Zozeko because she wanted to join their conversation. “How many places do you plan to go to, sir?” she inquired casually of the Zanaryan.

Meanwhile, she picked up a strange perfume that smelled of an herb-y chocolate. Hm, not very desirable to smell like a food.

Another bottle yielded a calming yet powerful scent of a storm. It brought to her mind images of dark clouds over mountaintops, high winds, cool temperatures, the odor of rain that would fall from infinite skies... She closed her eyes to drink in the force.

When her mind returned back to the store, Lazuli felt a sudden sense of claustrophobia. Before, she had wanted to soar. She set the bottle down, refreshed yet a bit disappointed, and moved on to the next one, murmuring, “These perfumes really are amazing.”

Nero performed one last tap on the surface of the counter before he turned to his left and gazed bored at the list that was held out to him and he frowned. “These aren't places,” he muttered to himself as he took the list that was shown to him and read idly through the listed items. Really, did he look like a directory? “The mops, tar, all this ship stuff, you can find them down a utility store near the port office. The market square is about ten minutes' walk from here and there's a parchment store near there, too. If it's still there,” he said with a shrug as he flicked or tossed or slid the paper to Zozeko's direction with his fingers. “Thought your son's supposed to do his homework?”

He'd asked it almost as soon as Lazuli had asked Zozeko of his plans and when she made known her high opinion of the surrounding perfumes, the door ahead of him swung open and he looked up to Jesse with a blue bottle on one hand.

“'course they are!” she said, the moment she stepped back out. “Lady Clarita's a rising star, don't you know? She's got a nose unlike any other.” She placed the bottle gently, making sure she showed it carefully to Zozeko. “Well, here you are! A blue bottle, just the way you want it. Anything else?” she also turned to Lazuli in case she had an inquiry or a purchase to make.

Zozeko frowned yet again. The redhead clearly couldn't have been alive even a quarter of Zeko's own life (unless he was a vampire, which he had shown no signs of), so it chafed a great deal that he was remarking on Malik's laziness. Yes, the boy had his problems, but he was nevertheless Zeko's son, and the boy's behaviour ultimately was his responsibility. Men did not blame their wives and children in public, even as they made sure to discipline them and call them out on their failures in the privacy of their homes.

“My thanks,” he said instead, though he really did want to put the man in his place. Female company was not the place to do such a thing anyway. “Malik, make your choice and say your farewells to these lovely ladies.” Zozeko might offer to accompany Lazuli to her destination, but in either case Malik would be visiting the shops Nero had suggested by himself. He was done holding the boy's hand.

The young Zanaryan placed two bottles on the counter along with the blue one Jesse had brought back, to which Zozeko had smiled and inclined his head in thanks for it was the perfect gift for his wife. Lifting his leg, Zeko pulled a few notes from his left boot (it was as safe a place as any on a ship like the Artega) and counted out the fee Jesse asked, then put the rest back and asked for a bag.

Having sulked his way through saying goodbye to "Miss Lazuli" (at least he had manners), Malik took the bag with their three bottles and the list (scribbling down the directions Nero had given) and waved himself off. He clearly knew better than to wait for his father this time, and sure enough Zozeko turned (after thanking Jesse politely) to Lazuli to ask, “May I escort you to your destination, ah'niss? Or perhaps the kind Nero would prefer to, since I do not know my way around Espur. In which case, might I ask the location of the nearest tavern instead? I have quite the thirst on me.”

As shopping time wrapped up, Lazuli made her decisions and took her to-be purchases to the counter. She would buy two of the dark blue perfumes, in addition to a light gold bottle carrying the scent of a sunny day.

“How much are these?” she asked, taking out a money pouch from her carrying bag. It jingled minimally with the tinkling of xanthos, and by that light sound and the relative small size of the bag, it was clear that Lazuli did not carry (or own, for that matter) much money. For this purchase, however, it should be enough.

After her giftshopping was done, she said good-bye to Malik, who had amused her very much and she was glad that he had been happy to have met her, too. She kept waving as the kid vanished from the shop. She gave Zozeko a sympathetic yet bemused look. “Children are always so free-willed, aren't they?” she said, half rhetorically.

When the man offered to accompany her to what would be Madame Reneer's mansion, Lazuli's expression turned to one of surprise and she glanced briefly between him and the "kind" Nero. “Oh-- you would be willing to go that far for me?” she asked, a bit hesitant at first to trouble someone in such a way, but then she had an idea.

“If both of you want to walk about, why not we deliver you to your tavern first, Mr. Zozeko, and then Nero can help me find my place? If he likes?” She smiled brightly, still exchanging looks with both companions. Finally she settled on Jesse. “Would you encourage that, ma'am?”

“I think that's a fabulous idea!” Jesse said brightly as she placed the packaged goods of Lazuli's onto the counter and smiled just as charmingly to Nero who glared at her under his burning pair of brows. “Nero lived here for three years before he moved away, you know?”

“Too much information,” Nero spat.

“If you want a good guide -- albeit a grumpy one -- you won't find yourself disappointed on Nero, I promise you,” Jesse went on to say, the tip of her lip raised up as she did so. “Just don't forget to feed him, right? He's a hungry dragon, he is.”

“You talk too much,” Nero snarled under his breath before he shoved himself off the counter he had practically pasted himself onto since the minute they arrived in the shop and...carefully stormed out of the boutique, almost with the intention to leave a trail of smoke where he passed. “Come on before she tells you where I live, that crazy woman.”

“He could be here, you wouldn't know!” called Jesse from behind her counter before she smiled at her two patrons. “Excuse him, he constantly has upset stomach but don't worry. He's a nice guy, that Nero. He really is. Could get a bit snippy but you can't win 'em all.” She beamed. “Thank you and enjoy your perfumes!”

Too much information, indeed, for Zeko was not at all interested in the man's background. Nor was he interested in Lazuli's either, or Jesse's for that matter, but for diplomacy's sake he refrained from saying as much and feigned at least marginal curiosity.

Nero was qualified as a guide, at least, if he had lived in Espur for three years. Such was nothing to a Zanaryan, a mere blink of an eye, but Zozeko was aware of what it meant to the shorter-lived races. Having already decided the redhead was one of those (human, Sidhe or Therian mattered little; they were all the same to him), he also decided that three years must be plenty of time for him to familiarise himself with the port city.

Assuming, then, that Jesse's comment about feeding him was metaphorical, Zozeko excused her irrelevant ramblings and snapped off a curt but infinitely polite bow. Then, holding out his elbow for Lazuli to take, he captured the door before it could slam back into its frame and arched an eyebrow at the Nymph.

He could not be more glad Malik had left when he did, for the redhead was clearly not an influence he wanted in his son's life.

For Lazuli, Jesse's good mood completely overrode Nero's disagreeability, and it seemed like that was the sort of relationship the two "enjoyed" regularly. She stifled giggles out of a bit of sympathy for Nero's plight and followed Zozeko's arm out the door before Nero could completely disappear into his trail of smoke. The carefully packaged perfumes shifted ever so slightly in her pack, and she was looking forward to presenting them to her gifteees. And I should find a goodie for Nic, too, she thought.

On the way to the tavern, Lazuli was eager to ask her companions about their thoughts on this town, the scenery, what places they had visited (and she expected that Zozeko and Malik had been to many). She also couldn't help but talk about some of her art -- it seemed better for her to share more about herself, anyhow, since both men seemed a bit reserved. “... this is going to be my biggest commission, I think,” she chatted proudly. “Mrs. Reneer wants a large canvas for a portrait, almost eight by eight feet. I'll be painting with a nice oil enhanced with seadew... limits the palette a bit and dries unexpectedly, but the end effect is amazing.”

And so she talked on in her feathery light voice till they reached the porch of what she suspected was the aforementioned tavern. "Hydra's Head", a giant sign read in vivid green letters.

“Well Mr. Zozeko, may Lady Xanth look after you and your son,” the nymph said, as the first part of the tour came to a close.

(( Since Emma wants to, I'm also perfectly fine with ending this thread. :) Feel free to give final posts, guys <3 ))

Zozeko had listened to the Nymph's inane chatter with a polite smile on his face and false interest in his eyes. Really, the look would have been one of pained boredom, but he had been raised to show some courtesy to the weaker sex and did not wish at this point to offend either of his companions.

Actually, neither was entirely true, but some of what Miss Lazuli had to say did keep his interest and beg a few questions of his own to investigate further. It was enough, at least, to keep his attention on her — which was fortunate, since he likely would have otherwise missed when she asked questions of her own.

And there came his real interest, talking of himself. Of course, he kept the finer points to himself (since he rather suspected that neither would appreciate his being a pirate, and would not risk his crew for vanity's sake) but did indeed brief Lazuli (and Nero, should he be paying any attention to their conversation) on some of his more interesting adventures.

Despite himself, by the time they reached the Hydra's Head (what an odd name for a tavern. Who in their right mind would sleep in a hydra's head?) Zozeko found he had rather enjoyed his interaction with the pair. Lazuli, at least, for Nero was another matter entirely.

“And may my Lord Ciro guide the wind to your sails, ah'niss.” He returned her well wishes as he bowed over her hand and held it to place a chaste kiss upon its back. Once upright, his gaze snapped to the redhead he had assumed was a Sidhe, and he inclined his head slightly in thanks.

“And perhaps, should either of you have need of safe passage across the channel, you will look up the Artega and her captain, Sebastian Jackson?” He would not tell them to "say I sent you", because neither he nor the captain would give discount for such. Still, should they ever do as suggested, their fare would provide opportunity for much-needed legitimate business. “Fare well.”

((Zozeko has left. Thanks for the thread, ladies! <3))

Nero was not at all impressed by this twosome. Why ever did I pick that scrap up? he might have asked but whatever, at least the stinky man was going away now.

Oops.

But the conversation prior that hadn't been something he enjoyed. The scenery was "all right," it never changed, the town was "just fine"...what else was Lazuli expecting him to say? He wasn't Espurian and Espur could move closer to the Delta for all he cared, he had no opinion whatsoever. His hands were inside his pocket, his lips barely parting the entire time they were walking and as Zozeko left, he couldn't help but bop his brow up a slight. Lord who? And what was the Artega?

“Sure,” he said anyway before the Zanaryan disappeared to Hydra's Head and with him, he's most impressive musk. Nero snorted a little.

Well, that's done. He turned to Lazuli and said to her in Sylvan (because why would you talk to a fellow nymph in any other language? It's senseless.), “So Reneer, that old meathag. She's not far from here but you can take a coach and get her to pay your fare, she won't notice it.”
